Hexham & Northern Marts held their annual May Term Sale of Store Cattle and offered another great entry of 716 head consigned from noted herdmasters from across Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria, The Scottish Borders, North Yorkshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire – such is the draw of the Hexham ring – the leading weekly sale of store cattle in The North England.
In line with recent weeks, trade for the older, forward classes was markedly easier than that seen throughout the first few months of the year and reflecting the current levels attainable for finished cattle via both liveweight and deadweight outlets.
These older cattle peaked on the day at £2660 for a sublime black Limmy bullock at 22 months from Herbert and Willie Hutchinson, White House, Weardale making a welcome return to Tyne Green with a cracking example of a forward bullock.
Messrs Scott, Corneyside, Matfen followed in these ranks with similarly well-bred bullocks at £2510 and £2480 and Willie Woodman, Great Chesters brought out yet another super run of cattle that scaled to £2420 for a pen of four Limmy Cross steers.
Older heifers topped at £2410 and £2400 for two trademark types from Jeremy Dodds, High House, Milbourne by the Limmy bull and Great Chesters lead female – a Charolais cross topped at £2320.
With a little trepidation towards the older classes it was the middle and younger aged ranks that saw the trade of the day and this was highlighted by a fantastic run of calves from Messrs Reay & Walton, St Oswalds that topped the sale at £2670 and outlined the benefit of the Hexham store ring against all other alternatives. Their lead bullock – a Limmy cross at fifteen months displayed great shape, scope and flesh and headed up a run of nine superb steers that returned at a whopping £2452 per head.
Heifers in this bracket topped at £2230 for a cracking Limmy lady at just 13 months from Dennis Thompson, Trewhitt Steads, Coquetdale who went on to sell other very similar well-bred types at £2140 and £2100.

Another strong catalogue of 311 outfits of Ewes, Gimmers & Hoggs with lambs at foot sold to yet another strong trade bucking the trend of other centres this week. An all in average of £132.38 was achieved with the vast majority being aged sheep as customers look forward to the Show and Sale next Friday.
Ewes with Lambs at Foot
Ewes with lambs at foot peaked at £200 per life for a very well-bred outfit from R E Williamson, Littleburn.
D Humble, Allergill Farm brought an exceptional run of 30 Cheviot Mule ewes with fantastic Suffolk x twin lambs at foot to peak at £146 and average a pleasing £145.33 or £435.99 for the outfit.
Mule Ewes were well cashed once again reaching £132 per life or £396 an outfit for strong ewes with Texel x lambs from loyal Hexham supporters D Fletcher & D Coates Short Thorns Farm. 207 Lives of Mule Ewes and lambs averaged a worthy £126.88 with very few being singles.
The third Weardale vendor to make headlines with ewes and lambs was Mr D Collingwood, Intake Farm who sold Swaledale Ewes with twins to £115 per life or £345 an outfit, this home also sold Mule ewes with twins to £128.

A quality show of shearlings with lambs were keenly bid for with many buyers leaving empty, the annual consignment of Mule shearlings with twin Texel x lambs from WD and B Thompson, East Unthank peaked at £170 twice or £510 an outfit and averaged a whopping £164.29 or £492.87.
A quality entry of Suffolk x shearlings with Texel x lambs at foot from J Herdman, Edlingham Newtown sold to £145 and £144 for twins.

A small entry of Hoggs with lambs at foot with the Show and Sale next Friday sold very well with 10 sweet Mule hoggs with Texel x lambs at foot selling to £160 per life or £320 an outfit from H S Hutchinson, White House.
