Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts held their first store sale of November and offered a sound catalogued entry of 366 store cattle and suckled calves. Following a blistering trade last week values were again in line for a more mixed show of cattle with the best end having largely been traded last month.
Trade peaked at £2740 for a big Angus bullock sold early in the day from Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside, Consett and the County Durham producer sold three to average £2540. Heifer trade topped at £2700 for a super sweet British Blue cross at 18 months from John & Daniel Whiteford, Borewell and the Berwick based father and son team enjoyed a smashing trade throughout with several females purchased as suckler replacements which saw their run of 28 steers and heifers return a very deserved £2311 throughout.
Messrs Whiteford sold the dearest Blue bullock at £2680 which tied with the top limmy steer, this one from Messrs Ogle, Blackburn. Charolais bullocks peaked at £2660 from John Carpenter, Rare Dene and his run of 8 came back at £2477.
Besides the heat for the borewell pen of heifers Robin Macdonald, Low Middleton saw a good return selling his two lead ladies at £2560 and £2540 and averaging a commendable £2303 for six sold.
Calves in the youngest age bracket of 9-11 months continue to sell well and peaked at £2140 for a thumping Limmy Steer calf from Ken Ridley, Allenshields who sold 13 in total, mainly older to average £2143 for the Blanchland breeder.
Next week will see the final special sale of the season – the second ‘Bellingham’ sale of suckled calves alongside the weekly sale of store cattle and entries are invited to be with the auctioneers by 10:30am on Monday 10th November.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold another mammoth entry of 8219 Store Lambs to an outstanding trader for all breeds and sizes, from Beltex’s to Swales, everything is keenly bid for and sold at Hexham, boasting an all in average of £119.15 which includes 3076 Swales, Mules, Blackfaces, Cheviots, Easycares and Herdwicks.
Today’s sale also included the Show of Store Lambs, very kindly judged by Mr Dave Doody, Solihull, Warwickshire, who awarded his prizes as follows:

Topping the sale at £235 was 2 Suffolk x lambs kindly donated to the Great North Air Ambulance charity by great Hexham supporters S Shell & Son, Brandon and purchased by another great Hexham supporter Mr Will Oliver. Messrs Shell also sold 50 more Suffolk x Ewe Lambs to reach £218 and 100 wether mates to £180.
Not to be out done was J & A Moralee, Hard Riding who sold their champion pen of 20 fantastic Beltex x lambs to £208 with others to £195, £190 and £189 averaging £192.90 for 78 quality lambs proving Hexham’s number 1 status at selling continental lambs.

Blackface lambs sold to great rates averaging all in £99.09, topping at £121 for 52 from G D Herdman, Edlingham Demesne with others to £117 from F T Walton, Flotterton.
Swales sold to £98 from D J & J E Lumley, Nookton and a pen of 100 from Waskerley Park made £89.
Cheviot lambs sold to strong returns with lambs to £125 from C Anderson, Dunterley and Cottonshope selling Cheviots to £124, £117 and £114.
