Hexham & Northern Marts held their first sale in the month of February and offered for sale a good entry of top quality store cattle, the majority of which were bred from noted suckler herds across the North of England and Scottish Borders.
With over three hundred and sixty head on offer and despite no let-up of the current moderate spell of mid-winter weather a larger crowd of eager bidders gathered at the ringside which saw a number of classes dearer on the week.
The sale peaked with an outstanding Blonde D’Aquitaine cross bred steer from The Walker Family of Houselope Grange, Tow Law, County Durham which at 21 months of age sold for £2640 to cap a great days trading for Messrs Walker at Hexham, selling four trademark Blonde bullocks that returned at £2400 per head.
The female trade on the day also took a marginal lift and with a great selection of quality females brought forward these peaked at £2620 for a sublime Limmy cross lady bred from a Blue cross suckler mother and consigned by father and son team Ken & John Robinson, Warksfieldhead. The heifer at just 15 months of age was highly sought after by a number of high-end/live market finishers keen to take home some of the ‘Warksburn’ breeding and ensuring the Robinsons went home smiling. In all the family sold four steers and four heifers all bearing the typical hallmarks of their proven suckler genetics and averaged a worthy £2345 per head throughout.
Likewise, another noted consignment came from Tom & Andrew Jackson, Midgeholm, Bardon Mill who witnessed their well-bred Limousin cross cattle peak at £2610 for a 20 month old, shapely and hefty steer with a heifer sister following closely at £2590. The Jacksons sold a smart half-dozen and with three steers and three heifers were delighted to attain an average of £2386 across the board.
Having recovered great favour within the industry and across the Northern upland fells over the last decade the Aberdeen Angus breed continues to feature prominently within the weekly catalogue and more than holds its own against the ‘continental cousins’ that once held the lion share of the market. Trade on the day for black bullocks was topped at £2540 twice and was shared jointly by Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside, Consett and Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh, Ebchester – both noted and regular purveyors of Angus cattle through the Hexham ring. Heifer trade for the same breed scaled to £2440 for a sizeable lass from Humshaugh based breeder, staunch Hexham supporter and one who thoroughly deserves the class leading price on this day – Richard Maughan, Greencarts.
A smaller portion of the catalogue was devoted to younger, yearling types however the quality therein was a credit to those that consigned on the day. A tremendous run of calves were presented by The Bell Family, Woodhall and these peaked at £2180 for their lead Limmy cross heifer with steers following at £2160 on three occasions and a smart Charolais cross changing hands at £2130. The Bardon Mill men were delighted with their trade on the day selling twenty-five well-bred calves to average a worthy £2023 throughout.
Similarly, James Forster, East Wharmley brought another run of Charolais crosses the short distance along the A69 to Hexham and was well-rewarded for his efforts. A total of thirty-seven calves presented topped at £1920 for ten month old steers, twice, and heifers then scaled to £1800. Seventeen steers and Twenty heifer sisters sold exceptionally well on the day to average a noteworthy £1758 throughout for a delighted Mr Forster.
Increasing numbers of dairy bred cattle are being sold to advantage through the Hexham ring and on this day local consignor of reared calves Mr Philip Dixon, West Heddon made a welcome return to Tyne Green and was beyond satisfied with his trade. A nice packet of yearling types sold to a top of £1760 for Blue heifers from the dairy herd and with a solitary Hereford cross steer at £1710 his run of nine calves averaged a more than healthy £1638 per head.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1651 Cast Ewes & Tups to another tremendous trade for all breeds, shapes and sizes with all 94 vendors forward from across Northumberland, Co Durham, Scottish Borders and surrounding areas.
Topping the ewes twice was £290 on two occasions – firstly a pen of 8 Texel ewes from M N H & M E Robinson, East Alwent Farm whose run of 19 ewes averaging £277.37, followed by Texel ewes from Messrs Raine, Townfoot who also sold ewes at £285.
Suffolk x ewes sold to £230 from J & M T Aynsley, Prior Hall for a trio.
Cheviot Mule ewes sold to £201 for 4 from J H Emerson, Haggate.
Mule ewes sold to £178 twice, firstly from J D Walton, Burnbank then 12 from SJS Livestock.
Blackface ewes sold to £162 for a trio from W L Patterson & Sons, Broomhope.
Kendall Rough Fell ewes sold to £151 for a pair from T M J & T R Johnson, Low Greenley Cleugh.
Swaledale ewes sold to £134 for a pair from I Collinson, Billing Shield who was one of 16 Weardale vendors utilizing the Hexham sheep ring.
Goats sold to a very dear trade and wanted to meet demand.

Hexham and Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 2014 Store Hoggs to a stronger trade on the week following national trend.
Sale top of £182 for two terrific Beltex cross from E & I Hall & Son, Newhouse.
A fantastic run of 26 Dutch Texel cross hoggs from E Lishman, Fell Lane, who achieved a considerable average of £139.
Cheviot and Hill bred lambs of all types received usual rates here at Tyne Green. This week selection topped at £130 a head from D I Rock Farming Co, Hethpool for a pen of 57 strong Cheviot Hoggs, who’s run of 118 Cheviots averaged £126.34
