Cast Cows & OTM
The opening cast cattle sale of the year attracted an entry of 54 cast cattle with a predominantly older and leaner types forward. Despite this, trade showed a notable improvement on the pre-festive period sales. These left a sale average of 265p/kg throughout.
Well-fleshed and finished cows met an excellent demand, topping at 354.5p/kg and 349.5p/kg, and achieving £3,075.60 and £3,023.18 for outstanding black Limousin cross cows from F & R Simpson, Square House.
Dairy cows sold to 269.5p/kg for Friesians from G G Baynes & Son, Marley Cote Walls, with Ayrshires from the same home reaching £1,750.38.
Cast bulls from K & SM Christensen, Cooper House Farm sold to 249.5p/kg, realising £2,544.90.
With this slight uplift in trade, we are actively seeking additional cast cattle for Tuesday sales.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1359 Prime Hoggs to a dearer trade at the first sale of 2026. Overall average of 340ppk or SQQ 348.6ppk with handy weights very keenly bid for.
Topping the trade at £195 was a Texel x lamb from Mr T Burnett, Staythorpe Farming, Newark whose run of 281 fed lambs from 37kg to 55kg sold with ease at 375ppk.
Staythorpe Farming also sold lambs to 435.9ppk and 433.3ppk.
