Hexham & Northern Marts held their first store sale in the festive month of December and offered a good entry for the time of year of 251 head of predominantly suckler bred store cattle and suckled calves.
With the majority of courts now filled to capacity and changeable winter weather now dominating weekly forecasts the crowd at the ringside was made up of fewer faces than those seen throughout November. That said, the best end of each class stills sells above and beyond expectations with only lesser plainer types proving harder to cash.
The sale peaked at £2680 for a big, smart limmy bullock from the Jackson’s of Midgeholme, Bardon Mill and the father and son team also saw the peak of the trade on the day with their lead heifer, another limmy, scale to £2620. Tom and Andrew sold a great pen comprising of 3 steers and 5 heifer sisters to level at £2493 per head, throughout.
Jeremy Dodds, High House, Milbourne presented three outstanding Limousin cross steers and these sold well with two changing hands at £2650 and the third close at £2580 to return at £2626 for the noted Ponteland based producer.
Charolais and Angus cross steers tied for the top price in each of their classes with Messrs Walker Bros, Satley selling to £2480 and averaging £2311 for seven sold by the white sire whilst the Black breed topped at the same price for Dougie Carmichael, Berwick Hill who cashed nine on the day to average £2371 per head.
Whilst the aforementioned Messrs Jackson saw the peak of the female trade other heifers also sold well and Messrs Ridley of Shitlington Hall stepped up to mark and presented the first cattle into the ring on this day which topped at £2400 twice and only narrowly fell short of averaging the same with their third selling at £2380.
The best end of Angus heifers were also sought after and these peaked at £2380 from Messrs Burn, Aydonshields, Hexhamshire whilst Harle Oliver, White House sold his leading lady to £2300 and averaged £2105 for nine sold to complete a sound days trading for the Matfen man.
Angus cattle remain the focus of keen demand and a brace of Coquet valley producers saw the benefit of this. The first, Messrs Hall of The Raw brought forward a nice packet of nine smart bullocks bred high on the MOD ranges and topped at £2240 to average £2075 to send the Elsdon men home happy over Billsmoor. Mac & Gregor Young, Sharperton Edge also saw the benefit of the Hexham ring and their offering of well-bred Angus cattle topped at £2300 for steers and £2200 for heifers to level at £2100 for ten sold by the father and son duo.
Yet another new customer that views Hexham as the leading centre for store cattle sales in the North was Mr Luke Conway, Dene Lodge, Seaham and the trip up the A19 was well worth it with three replete Belted Galloway steers greatly surpassing expectations to settle at £1660 each.
A very mixed entry of younger aged cattle were forward but again the best of these were easily sold. David Teasdale, Grindon Hill brought a super packet of shapely Limmy yearling calves down to Tyne Green and these saw great demand topping at £2480 for steers and £2000 for heifers to attain an average for six and four of each at £2081 across the board.
Similarly, Mel Stobbs sold five equally well-shaped Limousin cross calves at ten and eleven months of age and peaked at £2420 for steers and £2220 for heifers to take home a handsome purse to High Dalton, Hexhamshire of £2168 average throughout for his quintet.
The youngest calves came down from high on the Whitfield fells consigned by Messrs Short Ouston. With three generations of Short men in the ring their 6-7 month old suckled calves were keenly bid for and topped at £1820 for the best bullock and £1500 for the best of two heifers produced by noted stockman Dennis accompanied on this day by son Mark and Grandson Joshua.

Topping the sale at £260 was Dutch Texel ewes from T & S Wilson, Warkshaugh who also sold another at £258.
T Common & Son, Low Ardley sold Texel ewes to £248 with Texel x ewes from J A Beattie & Son, Greensfell at £242.
Mule ewes sold to £170 twice, firstly a pen of 5 from Low Ardley then a trio from J Terry, Low Mill Farm.
Blackface ewes sold to £143 for a trio from J Proctor, New Dotland.
Swale ewes sold to £113 for a pair from R & M J Lee, Harwood Shield.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 5855 Store Lambs with a solid trade throughout and many a buyer leaving empty handed.
Numbers creating numbers with a fantastic show forward for the twelfth month of the year with demand still strong regardless of resistance in the fat this week.
A sale peak of £170 for a flashy Beltex x from J Irvine, Mill House Farm.
Dutch Texels topped at £150 for a trio from T & S Wilson, Warkshaugh.
1458 hill bred lambs (Blackface, Swaledale & Cheviots) saw the section sell to a top of £123 for Cheviots from J & T Burston, Alwinton Farm.
Blackfaces peaked at £115 with half a dozen from R G & L A Grieve & Son, Whiteside.
Swaledale’s topped at £102 for a penful from L & D Archer, Stone Stile.
