An increase in meat and well finished heifers this week and back once again after his Friday exploits was West Cumbrian producer Mr Tim Pearson, High Plaskett Lands who sold Charolais cross heifers to 413.5p/kg and £2501.70.

Cast Cows & OTM

Cast Cattle go up another notch, with an explosive trade this week and remarkably dearer once again, leaving several vendors speechless at their returns here at Hexham. A poorer offering of cows forward with less flesh forward. This did not deter the ring full of prospective purchasers and the entry of forty-seven cattle went on to average 292p/kg, “Trumping” all other alternatives. Included in this average were several well-sold ex-parlour cows, with more required to satisfy the current strong demand.

Leading the sale with a six-year-old Limousin cross cow was K & HA Ridley, Allenshields which sold to a nuclear 377.5p/kg or £3208.75.

Three cows reached the heights of 345.5p/kg this week; firstly, a Charolais feeding cow from John Coxon, Park Head, Newcastle Upon Tyne. This was then followed by a British Blue cross cow from Robin MacDonald of Low Middleton Livestock, Belford which made the trip down the A1 to Hexham. Finally, from a just stones throw away, a Simmental cross from K Smith & Sons, East Greenridge also achieved the same price.

Highest price native cow was a 6-year-old Luing cow from K Smith & Sons, East Greenridge which sold to 329.5p/kg. A 13-year-old, tank of an Angus cross cow from Holystone Estates, Low Harnham which sold to 313.5p/kg and £2633.40.  

Ayrshire cows from G G Baynes & Son, Marley Cote Walls sold to 239.5p/kg and £1664.53.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1178 Prime Hoggs to a sharper trade for all classes forward with a heavier average weight and 22 pens over 400ppk.

Topping the sale at £215 twice were Texel x hoggs from T B French, Hallgate, Spalding who sold 180 hoggs to average 50.58kg, 340.97 or £171.81 which included 80 Mule hoggs.

Top ppk was 432.4ppk for a 34kg hogg from T B French who also sold 47kg hoggs at 431.9ppk.
