Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its first show and sale of the 2026 back-end season with a nice entry of 492 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. This week’s special show and sale was for Charolais and Other Continental bred cattle (excluding Limousins).
This year’s pre-sale show was judged by Mid Northumbrian finisher, Mr Robert Gray, Low Hall, Amble and once again kindly sponsored by Stoneacre Motor Group and Zoetis.
A fantastic show of cattle this year brought forward for the judge to cast his eyes over, especially the Charolais cross steer class. It was the British Blue class winner from J D Yeats, Woodhouse that took the Overall Championship and Hexham & Northern Marts Challenge Bowl.

Standing reserve and winning The Scottish and Northern Charolais Breeders’ Association Cup was the Charolais champion, a thumping steer from Walker Bros, Satley.

After the show the sale commenced with a fierce start with Angus steers in the ring first from G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside selling to £2760.00.
Trade for the older, forward stores went up a considerable notch and dearer on the week with increased purchasers ringside eager for cattle. This left some onlookers astonished by the rates of return achieved here at Hexham. This year’s sale average saw a very healthy and quite remarkable lift (considering the fat price) of £60 across the board and levelled at £2088.24 for both store cattle and calves. Store steers and heifers saw an average of £2184.40 and weaned calves averaged (8-11 months) £1844.50.
Leading the sale was the Charolais champion, a great steer from Walkers Bros, Satley which achieved £2780.00. A further ten beasts blitzed past the £2600.00 throughout the day.
A tremendous run of twenty-five Charolais steers from I & A Hamilton, Claywalls met a tremendous trade. Steers with size and power that sold to a high of £2640.00 and levelled at £2471.20.
Highest priced heifer on the day came out of the Champions stable from J D Yates, Woodhouse. A wonderful black BB x heifer that caught plenty of attention and sold to £2680.00. The Yeats’ cattle have a real reputation amongst the finishers ringside for their growth and finishing ability and this showed with the Haltwhistle based family averaging £2060.00 for their run of thirty-one British Blue and Limousin cross steers and heifers.
Leading price for a Charolais cross heifer came from Hallbankgate Farms, a very stylish and thick heifer bred by a homebred sire sold to £2520.00. The renowned Cumbrian outfit saw a great demand for their Charolais cross Steers and Heifers bred out of “Hairy Hill Cows” with steers selling to £2240.00 and the run of thirty six levelling just shy of £2000.00.
The better end of the weaned calves met an absolutely flying trade and this was typified by the run of fifty weaned Charolais steer calves from F T Walton, Flotterton and C & C Farming, Flotterton Cottage. Charolais steers that were very highly sought after and these saw a high of £2340.00 for a 12-month steer and £2260.00 and £2220.00 for 10-month steers from C & C Storrow. F T Walton, Flotterton sold great bunches of steers to £2260.00 for the first prize winning pen of four and others selling to £2230.00 & £2220.00.
T J Lee & Son, Hackford also brought a lovely run of Charolais bred cattle and sold a pair of 11 month of steers to £2020.00 and heifer calves selling to £1680.00 at the same age.
Next week will see our Grand Show and Sale for Limousin bred cattle, kindly sponsored by The Farmers Guardian and we are actively seeking entries to fulfil the ever-increasing demand for store cattle here at Hexham.
Please do not hesitate to call Drew Patrick 07854361967 or Andrew Hucheson 07955275403 with any enquires.
