Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its first sale of the new 2026 calendar year with a small entry forward for the weekly ringside of buyers. However, those consigning cattle were handsomely rewarded, with trade maintaining the strong levels seen in early December.

The first beast into the ring achieved the top price of the day—an Angus cross steer from W. Carpenter & Son, Rare Dene, selling for £2,310.00. The same home also sold the dearest heifer of the day, another Angus cross, which realised £2,280.00.

A handful of stirks were forward this week, topping at £1,450.00 for an eight-month-old Simmental cross steer from T.M.J. & T.R. Johnson, Low Greenley Cleugh.

Next week will see our Opening Show and Sale of Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. Entries are now invited, with strong demand anticipated for Store Cattle following the lack of sales over the festive period.

Topping the sale at £300 for a Texel from W J Scott Ltd, Low Leam who also sold 4 ewes at £275.

A trio of Dutch Texel x ewes sold to £210 from Messrs B A & A M Storrow & Sons, Willimoteswick.

Suffolk x ewes sold to £202 for 3 from G & E A Herdman, Luns Houses.

Bluefaced Leicester ewes sold to £198 for a trio from F Johnson, West Shipley.

South Country Cheviot ewes sold to £139 for 57 from F T Walton, Flotterton.

Swale ewes sold to £110 for 5 from R M Gascoigne, Miln House.

Store Hoggs

Hexham & Northern Marts sold a smaller entry of 739 Store Hoggs to a strong trade with some buyers leaving empty handed – a whole sale average of £1116 was achieved for a mixed show of hoggs.

Topping at £155 was a quartet of strong Texel x hoggs from B D Milburn, Butterknowes. This home averaged £143.44 for 59 sold.

R H Walton, Linacres sold 17 quality Texel x lambs at £150.

P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope sold lambs to £140 and averaged £132.67.

Mules reached £130 from R & M J Lee, Harwood Shield.

Many more Hoggs wanted to satisfy the demand here at Hexham next week.
