Sale of Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered an increased entry of 541 catalogued head which included over 200 native breed animals for the monthly special sale of such types.

With cattle consigned from Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria & The Scottish Borders and with a distinctly ‘spring-like’ outlook across the region this week a great crowd of buyers gathered at the ringside to vie for all classes.

The sale was topped by a huge red Limousin cross bullock sold at 20 months of age and a departure from the usual marketing policy of Messrs Walton, Greyside, Newbrough who saw their pen leader soar past expectations to level at £2160 selling to a delighted south country purchaser.  Another from the same home sold at £2000 as did the lead Angus cross beast on the day; a super square and hefty bullock from Messrs Burn, Aydonshields, Hexhamshire – all three sale leaders surely cementing Hexham as the leading centre for the sale of both continental and native breed cattle store cattle in The North of England.

The lead heifer was also by the Black Aberdeenshire sire; this one another consigned by staunch Hexham customer John Carpenter, Rare Dean, Cornsay, who regularly benefits from the short trip up to Hexham from County Durham and on this occasion saw £1780 for the best of his female offering as well as £1900 for the best of both his Angus and Charolais cross steers all at 22 months.

On the now targeted native day a variety of breeds were represented and all sold well.  Huge Hereford crosses sold to £1720 for steers and £1650 (twice) for heifers from Messrs Eggleston, Thornham Hill; South Devon Heifers sold to £1340 from John Moore, Wingates Wholme; Belted Galloways Sold to £1200 and £1150 for weighty heifers from Jimmy Kane, Bank Top, Holywell; Luings sold to £1090 for a smashing pen of eight outwintered bullocks from Ian Bell, Hallbankgate, Brampton, Cumbria and a nice run of four Highland steers topped at £910 to average £877 from Danny Turner, Daniel Farm.

A good proportion of the catalogue included many yearling native breed types and these were markedly dearer than of late, a number of consignors remarking on their vastly improved averages from the same sale last year. The entire entry of Angus yearling steers and heifers levelled at a staggering £1172 and topped at a noteworthy £1500 for two fantastic bullocks from Robert & Margaret Telfer, Demesne Farm Bellingham.  A smaller number of Angus calves, or weanlings topped at £1380 for a smart calf from Chris Rutherford, Old Town and these returned at £1095 average across the board – surely tempting for those with such cattle to sell to give the renowned ring at Hexham a try.

With the countryside gradually changing colour and daylight hours stretching out further each week trade for all the younger classes continues to be buoyant and like the natives on this day the quality entry of continental calves were also well sought after. Messrs Storrow, Willimoteswick topped the class with a cracking Limmy bullock at 10 months that soared to £1540 with their lead heifers cashing at £1410 and the run of twelves calves returning at £1361 per head.

Messrs Thompson, East Unthank topped at £1500 for steers and £1350 for heifers to level at £1421 for four sold and for the second week Messrs Milburn, Wallend and Messrs Robinson, Hawksteel figured highly with their top quality Limmy calves at £1380 and £1360 for a bullock and a heifer respectively.

With fodder in short supply following the dry summer and prime values showing no signs of easing producers with cattle ready to sell are urged to take advantage of the rates attainable through the Hexham ring and to contact our auctioneers without delay to discuss the marketing of your stock.
