Sale of Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle and offered a good catalogue of 687 head, the majority of which were native breeds for the monthly special sale of such types.

With cattle from noted producers from across the North of England & Scottish Borders trade and demand continued at levels seen earlier in the month despite quality in the main now waning.  Those presenting first-draw cattle from herds farmed on the higher fells with best end sorts leading their consignments were well rewarded and saw significant lifts on the year.

The sale peaked at £1880 for a hefty Angus bullock from noted native breed consignor Dennis Burn, Aydonshields, Hexhamshire who saw his three similar types average £1760 per head.

A brace followed at £1790 – the first a Big Limmy cross steer at 22 months from Doug Whitfield, Berry Edge, Consett, Co. Durham and another Angus at the same price which led the 25 strong consignment from Longtown based Cumbrian consignors and regular supporters of the Hexham ring Messrs Harrison, Peddar Hill.

Older heifers sold well and these peaked at £1780 for a smart Limmy from Stuart Macdonald, Hammershields, Allenheads with another selling for £1760 from Messrs Moore, Highside, Kellah.

With almost all major native breeds represented one of the highlights was the cracking run of over yearling cattle from Brothers Alan & Selby Robson, Yatesfield – high on the Otterburn Army Ranges – that sent forty-five tremendous calves by the Beef Shorthorn & Angus sires.  Expertly drawn and presented In batches of sixes and sevens the cattle were a credit to the brothers and truly a lesson in how to present beast for sale when many opt to sell in singles and pairs the rewards for the ‘old approach’ were evident as their Shorthorn steers peaked at a massive £1530 and Angus at £1480 to average a deserved £1359 for 45 steers and heifers sold on the day.

Cattle in the middle aged range from 11 to 17 months sold well and topped at £1740 for a monster bullock from Thomas Graham, West Foreshields, Alston, Cumbria with a pair of smart steers from Messrs Peart, Hareshaw, Bellingham following at £1660 and a cracking pair of Hereford bullocks from Alan Parker, High Woolley, Allendale scaling to £1640. The heifer entry in this class topped at £1610 for a smart and hefty Angus heifer from Messrs Hall, West Butsfield presented by partner Rachel Harrop who saw her nine very well bred females average a worthy £1407 throughout.

The youngest class at ten months and under, whilst smaller in numbers forward saw no less of a trade and topped at £1560 for an outstanding Limmy heifer from Robert and John English, Brownsleazes with bullocks peaking at £1350 from Messrs Wood, Low Acton.  Two bulls followed from noted breeders Messrs Storrow, Willimoteswick at £1340 and £1320 also by the Limmy sire, whilst the dearest Angus weanling on the day sold at £1300 and was a pure bred steer from Graham Wilkinson & Family, Bollihopeshield, Weardale, County Durham.

As numbers tighten demand shows no sign of easing at Hexham with grass now in full flourish and pastures populated with cattle enjoying the spring weather.  If you have cattle to sell the auctioneers urge you to make contact and we will be delighted to advise on how to maximise your returns from your stock.
