Sale of Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their special monthly sale of native breed cattle within their weekly store sale and offered a sound entry of 570 catalogued head from herdmasters across Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria and The Scottish Borders.

As is typical on such days a very mixed show of quality was presented throughout which ranged in value from £2000 at the highest down to £360 for some hard wintered heifer stirks proving indeed that this centre has buyers at the ringside for all classes of cattle.

The first beast sold on the day was one of those that attained the top price of £2000 and was an exceptional Angus cross bullock from relatively new herdmasters Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms. The big black bullock at 24 months had been sired by a registered ‘Rawburn’ pedigree Angus bull and Messrs Watson witnessed the full benefit of the demand for native breed cattle through the Hexham ring.

Later in the day it was a sleek, black Limmy cross heifer at 18 months of age that kept the flag flying for the continental contingent which also scaled to the same figure and this one was sold by father & son team Jasper & James Wardle, Brokenheugh.

A pair of lily-white pure bred heifers from noted pedigree breeders Messrs Campbell, Thrunton kept the Charolais breed to the fore also and this pair realised a noteworthy £1960 for the Alnwick based Campbell family.

An undoubted highlight of the sale was the run of a dozen phenomenal Limousin cross bullocks at 12-14 months from acclaimed County Durham cattlemen and brothers Frank & Reg Simpson, Square House, Quebec.  Presented in fine form and displaying huge potential the bullocks garnered attention from all high end finishers around the ring and as such sold very, very well topping at £1930 and averaging a commendable £1775 per head at and to repeat; twelve to fourteen months of age!

On the native breed day all such types sold well and as well as the aforementioned sale topping Angus bullock at £2000 Angus heifers peaked at £1500 from Robin Hall, Kirkley Dam House, Beef Shorthorn steers sold to £1290 from Messrs Younger & Stamp, Watch Hill with heifers topping at £1300 for undoubtedly some of the highest farmed from Messrs Dixon, Blindburn in The Coquet Valley.

Pure bred Hereford cattle sold to £1460 for a nicely grown Heifer at 24 months from Tom & DI Harrison, Moralee Herefords who also cashed a cracking young bull at £1440 whilst cross bred cattle by the same sire scaled to £1195 for steers and £1140 for heifers at 12 months from Steven Anderson, Needless Hall Moor.

Completing the gamut of native types was the increasingly popular Luing and Messrs Robson, Townshields on The Roman Wall enjoyed the peak of this trade selling to a top of £1100 and an average of £985 for a dozen nicely grown sorts all purchased by the same buyer to graze rough hill pasture for the summer.

As is commonplace within these sales the Angus yearlings feature highly and today was no exception with this class probably dearer than it has been all spring.  Highlights included the class topping steer from Linacres at £1620 with another at £1610 from Redsteads and a third at £1570 from High Barns. Heifers in the same bracket climbed to £1240 also from Linacres with one more at £1220 from East Butsfield and the entire entry of black yearlings returned at £1142 for 132 sold on the day.

Proof once again that a late turn is not a bad turn at Hexham were the nice run of ten pure bred Charolais young bulls that were sent south from the Coquet valley by noted ‘Burradon’ pedigree breeder Chris Curry.  The top quality bloodlines shone through and saw the run peak at £1820 to average £1541 throughout also highlighting the Hexham ring as an eminently viable outlet for young bull producers.

As numbers ramp up towards the traditional turnout sales of May the auctioneers would welcome expressions of interest from any herdmasters with cattle yet to be sold that could benefit from the genuine trade attainable through the sale ring here at Hexham.

Entries are now invited for next weeks sale and the special May prize show and sale and the May term sale to be held on the 5th and 12th of the month respectively.  Contact auctioneers Chris Armstrong on 07808 721957,  Drew Patrick on 07854 361967 or our team of staff at the mart on 01434 605444 to place your entry.
