Sale of Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly catalogued sale of 287 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. A very mixed bag forward this week, older store Store Cattle still in high demand and met extreme rates. Store cattle average finished off at a very respectful £1310.62. Leading the trade was a mighty black Limousin cross steer from Campbell Hewittson, Greenchesters Farm that cashed at £1990.00. Three further beasts broke the £1900 barrier, first an Angus cross steer from Messrs G & JH Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside selling to £1920.00. Realising the same price was a Charolais cross steer from David and Nick Walker, Satley. Finally, a 14 month old Limousin x steer from the top of Weardale forward by Mr D Collingwood, Intake Farm sold to £1900.00.

Leading the heifer trade was a Stabiliser heifer consigned by Mrs V S Allgood, Nunwick which went on to sell for £1780.00. Angus cross heifers sold to a premium once again here at Hexham and peaked at £1700.00 from Sunniside.

The better end of the yearling cattle were in demand as they have been all spring. Mr K Hall, North Farm, Butsfield saw the benefits of heading north on the A68 once again selling 11-month-old Angus cross steers to £1680.00.

Proving being sold later in the day doesn’t affect trade was Messrs Walton, Farnbury who sold 11-month-old Limousin cross steers to £1550.00.

Quality 12-month-old Limousin cross heifers from Messrs Town Farm (Wall) Ltd, Wall sold extremely well to £1610.00 and £1600.00 respectively.

A very mixed show of stirks and weaned calves this week with a good number of dairy bred beasts as well as beef bred calves. Trade would possibly slightly easier on the week due to less faces ringside due to the start of lambing season but still left an average of £1077.50 throughout.  

Greenchesters Farm sold good growey, 10 month old Angus cross steers to £1380.00. Messrs Storrow & Sons, Willimoteswick were back with their usual stamp of quality weaned calves selling a pair of 9-month Limousin cross steers to £1320.00.  

Heifers in this section peaked at £1330.00 for a pair of Limousin cross heifers from Messrs G H & A Walton, Farnbury, Alston.

Hexham and Northern Marts sold 760 Cast Ewes & Rams to another decent trade for a poorer show on offer with a lot of lean sheep about. Topping the sale was a Texel ewe at £246 from Mr P R Scott, West Rennington. With Suffolk ewes to £178 from Messrs M C & M D Sparke, Salmonfield.

Blackface ewes sold to £115 for 4 from G & R Mitcheson, Bolam Lake House.

Store Hoggs

Hexham and Northern Marts sold 1801 Store Hoggs to a flying trade averaging £89.97 for all breeds, shapes and sizes.

Topping the sale were 5 humongous Texels at £144 from Messrs Hall Farm, Humber Hill.

 At £130 were hoggs from Mr M G Stephenson, Rowley Link and from Staythorpe Farming, Newark who had an impressive run of 238 averaged £111.58.

Suffolk hoggs sold to £128 from Messrs Martin Bros, Cheviot.

A Herdwick sold to £125 from Mr P Charlton, Southview who also sold Mules to a top of £124.

Blackface hoggs sold to £124 for a pen of 5 from Messrs Murray, Cross House
