Hexham and Northern Marts held its Annual May Bull Sale which was kindly sponsored by NFU Mutual (Hexham Branch) and The Fold Farm Vets, we thank them for their generous support. Once again proved to be a successful sale with a new centre record made today, which was achieved by a new consignor of the Limousin section, Messrs JM & SM Priestly, Cracrop Farm with Brontemoor Superman, selling for 8000gns.

Limousin

A great Show of Limousin Bulls once again this year, the presale show was ably judged by renowned Cumbrian Stockman, Mr Stephen Graham, Miller Hill.

Mr Graham awarded the Overall Championship to Brontemoor Superman, a Knock Msport Son. Superman went on to sell for the new centre record of 8000gns.

Standing Reserve was Saunders Smirnoff, a Maraiscote Nickleback Son. This hard muscled bull went on to realise 5800gns.

Aberdeen Angus

More Aberdeen Angus bulls forward this year which can only be described as having a flyer of a trade for the types forward.

Leading the sale at 5000gns was Berwick Hill Eston Arrow from L R Carmichael & Son, South East Farm. The same home sold Berwick Hill Eston Angus for 4000gns.

Hereford

Just the one Hereford Bull forward which sold well from Messrs T & D Harrison, The Old Potato House. A son of renowned Hereford Sire, Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks, Moralee 1 Wisdom sold for 3800gns.

Messrs T & D Harrison also brought forward the only Pedigree Female, Moralee 1 Lavender, that sold locally for 2000gns.

Beef Breeding Cattle

The catalogue of Commercial Beef Breeding Cattle was slightly increased on the year with greater numbers forward, the best end offering sold well whilst secondary types met steadier demand and harder to cash.

The sale peaked at £3400 twice for great Limousin heifers with smart calves at foot from both Gordon & Julie Sedgewick, Ricknall Grange and Messrs Tindale, Paradise.

Blue cross heifers sold to £3200 also from Paradise whilst Angus cross outfits saw a brisk demand and peaked at £3000 from Mr F T Walton, Flotterton. Followed by another at £2900 from Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh.

Coneygarth Farms Ltd dispersed their herd of Pedigree Angus Cows & Calves along with Stock Bull, Bothal Earl. This home also offered Angus cross and Limousin cross Commercial Cows with Angus cross calves at foot.

Leading the Female trade was a five-year-old Cow with twin Bull Calves at foot, selling to £2100.

The Commercial Cows sold to a high of £1980 for a 2012 born Limousin cross Cow with an Angus cross Bull Calf at foot.

The Herd sold their Stock Bull Bothal Earl for 3000gns.

Part one of the Nampara dispersal took place with mainly Autumn and early Spring calved Angus cross cows with their Angus cross calves at foot.

This genuine herd of cows went on to peak at £1900 for a Angus cross heifer with her October born steer calf at foot. Selling to £1850 was another Angus cross heifer with her January born heifer calf at foot.

J & F Hartley, Low Shipley

A part dispersal took place on behalf of Messrs J & F Hartley & Son, Low Shipley, which was made up of Pedigree and Pure-bred Limousin cows.

Topping the sale at £2050 was 2016 born, ‘Low Shipley Megan’ with her Autumn born Bull Calf.

Reaching £2000 was a 2012 cow ‘Low Shipley Helena’ with an Autumn Born Bull Calf.

R Lawson, Burnhill Farm

The first offering of Burnhill Farm dispersal took place on behalf of Mr R Lawson. A closed herd that is predominantly made up of Simmental genetics. A herd of good working cows with calves that have growth and shape on their side.

The sale began with the Autumn born calves which sold well and to a high of £2300 for a 2011 born, Limousin cross cow with her twin born steer calves at foot.

Selling to £2250 on two occasions was first a Simmental x 2nd Calver with her heifer calf at foot, followed by a Simmental x heifer with a steer calf at foot selling to the same price.

Topping the spring calving cows at £1820 was a 2013 born Simmental x crow with her February born steer calf.
