Hexham Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Hexham Auction Mart

Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle which included the monthly special sale of native breeds.  The catalogued entry comprised of 552 head, representing an increase of over fifty head on the year with a number of new vendors realising the benefits of consigning cattle for sale at this centre.

As has been the case over the past several weeks trade lifted again and demand remains buoyant with a marginal improvement in weather and a drier atmosphere possibly enthusing finishers to house more cattle when the first month of the year positively discouraged such enthusiasm.

The sale peaked at £2700 for a thumping Limmy cross steer from Messrs Herdman, Lunns House who sold seven of their trademark steer in great fettle to average a very worthy £2524 across the board.

Fittingly on the native breed day an angus heifer followed from Messrs Watson, Holywell farms, Church Farm which scaled to £2680 and led their run of eleven sold on the day to return at £2179 per head.

Messrs Jackson, Midgeholm presented quite possibly their best pen of cattle to date and were well rewarded for their efforts with high end finishers battling to take home some of the cracking cattle.  With Limmy steers to £2650 and heifer sisters following at £2600 the father and son team enjoyed an average of £2420 for six sold from the Bardon Mill parish.

A great many consignments of yearling type cattle are now coming to the fore and the undoubted highlight of this class on this day were the sixty-seven Angus and Hereford cross steers and heifers consigned from North Northumberland by Messrs Jordon, Tughall Grange, Chathill.  The fantastic run of calves were presented in fine form and a real credit to Mr Jordon who enjoyed a great trade on the day. The run peaked at £2580 for a stupendous Angus cross bullock which travelled at pace and set the tone for the entire consignment with the lead Hereford Cross steer hitting £2360 and the best heifer, of which there were only nine, was an Angus that cashed at £2140.  The entire run of sixty-seven well bred cattle were in great demand from start to finish and levelled at a very respectable £1863 per head at 9-15 months of age.

A small but quality entry of continental yearlings were sold towards the end of the day and these also continue to ascend at Hexham. Messrs Yeats, Woodhouse, Coanwood always figure highly in sale reports at this centre and today was no exception. Another father and son team – John & Steven sold super shapely Limmy steers to £2290 and belting Blue crosses to £2260 and attained a cracking average of £2041 for a dozen sold at 12 months of age.

Entries are invited for next weeks sale and the following week which will see the March prize show and sale held alongside the culmination of the annual YFC calf wintering competition.  Please advise all entries to our auctioneers or to the main office by 12 noon each Monday.
