Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered for sale a catalogued entry of 245 head.
A smaller but useful entry met with a steady trade throughout and perhaps a reduced company of buyers due to inclement weather. The best end of all classes continued to sell at great advantage although lesser, secondary types were harder to cash and looked easier on the week.
The sale was topped at £2620 for a huge Charolais cross bullock from Messrs Ogle, Blackburn and this was followed by a brace of Limmys at £2560 and £2500 from Messrs Herdman, Lunns House. Charolais too sold at the same figure – the first from Jonathan & Janet Wales, Thackwood Farm, Raughton Head, Cumbria and then again from Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh, Ebchester.
Older Angus cattle continue to sell well peaking at £2460 for a bullock from Messrs Tomlinson, Sunniside with another at £2440 also from Newlands Haugh. A brace of Blue crosses sold well from Messrs Carr, Camphill at £2360 and £2300 and Hereford steers topped at £2200 from Messrs Renner, Yetlington.
The heifer trade topped at £2500 for a black beauty also from Sunniside with Limmys following at £2380 and £2320, both of these being typical of the weekly offering from Lunns House.
A small and more mixed entry of yearling cattle sold to a straight trade topping at £2140 and £2120 from Messrs Bousfield, Low Stokoe for two shapely red Limmy steers whilst calves at just 9 months sold to £1920 and £1900 from James McGregor, East Loanend, Berwick on Tweed.

Cast Ewes
Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1202 Cast Ewes, Tups & Goats to a dearer then expected trade with overall average up £7 on the week. Selling to a ring full of buyers operating on many numbers.
Topping the sale at £290 was a Texel ewe from D Thirwell, Townhead Farm. At £285 was a pen of 6 Texel ewes from Quickeningcote Partners. A further 10 pens sold for £250 or more.
Dutch Texel Ewes sold to £250 for a pair from J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill,
Bluefaced Leicester ewes topped at £195 from Messrs Charlton, Whiteside.
Very few heavy cross ewes around this week with Suffolk cross ewes selling to £192 from S D White, Steel Hall.
Cheviot Mule ewes sold to £182 from JW & CM Ormston, Larch Hill.
Mule ewes sold to £172 for 4 from J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters.
Horned ewes sold to a very fast trade with Blackface ewes selling to a top of £162 for 5 from Messrs Charlton, Whiteside who also sold 15 at £150.
Swale ewes sold to £130 for 5 from J H Emerson, Haggate.
Goats sold to a flying trade topping at £175 for a Billy from H E Jewitt, Lodge House Farm.

Inlamb Ewes
A small entry of Inlamb ewes were forward with this class eagerly bid for with a top of £230 a head for a pen of 16 Cheviot Mules from HM & JS Hutchinson, North Close. Entries are invited for next weeks official opening sale, with early entries advised for maximum coverage.

Store Hoggs
Hexham and Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 2393 Store Hoggs to a steadier trade on the week, as weather and fat trade sees confidence lessen albeit a healthy average of £110.23 for a weathered show forward. This average includes 715 Horned and Hill type sheep.
Topping today was a Texel cross Hoggs from W A & M Robson, High Baulk at £150.
A quartette of smart Texel cross Hoggs from I & C Rutter, Burradon Mains at £147.
Horned Hoggs achieved a height of £127 for a trio of Blackface from J R F Pattinson & Son, Hotbank Farm.
