Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle and offered a good catalogued entry of 535 head which included over 200 head of spring born suckled calves for the second ‘Bellingham’ sale of such sorts and represented the last of the special seasonal sales of store cattle and suckled calves at the Tyne Green Auction Complex.  

A useful entry of older sorts were sold first and these were topped by a great run of cattle from Ian, Lynn, Robbie & Paul Scott, Corneyside, Matfen who sold a terrific packet of Limousin cross steers to top of £2780 and equally well-bred heifers that topped at £2580 twice leading to a cracking average of £2626 per head for 5 steers and 3 heifers sold on the day.

Jeremy Dodds, High House, Milbourne sold a trio of thumping Limmy cross bullocks which topped at £2720 and averaged a noteworthy £2580 for the three whilst Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms also topped at £2580 for the biggest Angus heifer in the mart that led to their run of five levelling at £2244.

Robert Leiper, Bygate presented the best run of his Angus bred bullocks this year and was well-rewarded for them. Sold in nicely drawn lots the run peaked at £2640 and sold fast and well to average £2473 for the load of fifteen.

Likewise James Herdman, Newtown brought forward another packet of his signature Charolais cross steers which always draw a crowd and this day was no exception. Peaking at £2550 the cattle bred on the tops by the A697 at Edlingham were good to sell and regular buyers were as keen as ever leading to a deserved average of £2365 for ten sold.

Displaying phenomenal ‘growth for age’ were the trio of cattle from the English men of Brownsleazes in the Warksburn and Robert and John were again handsomely rewarded for their trademark Blonde D’Aquitaine sired calves. Two single steers both scaled to £2600 each and despite the auctioneers best efforts the third; a heifer fell just short at £2500 to seal a return of £2566 per head.

With a change of class on the catalogue came a shift in buyers assembled at the ringside and those gathered for the spring born suckled calf section witnessed a largely easier trade than that seen in October.   The best end of calves were still good to sell with Limmy bullocks topping at £2200 from David Sedgewick, Errington Red House and a smart run from The Clarksons of Elrington topping at £2000 for steers and £1980 for heifers to level at £1840 for sixteen sold.

Limmy cross heifer calves topped at £2100 for quite simply the best calf ever presented at this centre by Pam Harrison, East Flass whilst a brace of pure-bred ladies from Andrew Proctor, Swarland that will, in the fullness of time reach their breeding potential with their new owner scaled to £1980 and £1950.

Despite the monthly native breed sale not scheduled until next week mention must go to the consignment of native bred steer calves from The Cleaboy Farming Company, Mount St John Estate, Thirsk, North Yorkshire that were brought to Hexham for the first time under the able hand of stockman Jack Charleton.  A smart and weighty run of calves at 8/9 months of age these were presented in well-drawn batches and sold well to see the first three pens of Angus steers all cashed at £1600 and with Hereford crosses following closely at £1580 the run of twenty saw no ‘first time buyer apprehension’ and levelled at £1558 to crown a worthwhile trip North up the A1.

Hexham and Northern Marts sold 1706 Cast Ewes & Rams to another strong trade on a very wet morning.

Texel ewes topped the sale at £270 twice, firstly for 4 from J O Clark, Brinkburn Newhouses and then for a trio from I Spedding, Harelaws.

Beltex x ewes sold to £250 from R L Riddle & Son, Blakelaw.

J O Clark, Brinkburn Newhouses also sold Suffolks to £236, whos run of 57 went on to average £192.53.

Two huge Mule Ewes sold to £202 from Telfer Brothers, Make-Me-Rich.

Blackface Ewes sold to £138 for a trio from J R F Pattinson & Son, Hotbank.

Swaledale Ewes sold to £122 for a pen of 11 from K Nixon, Hesleywell.

Store Lambs

Hexham and Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 5914 Store Lambs to another strong trade to average all in £119.65, smaller long term lambs would see a notable lift however all lambs remain very good to sell.

Topping the sale at £154 was a pair of strong Texel cross lambs from B D Milburn, Butterknowes, this home sold 47 lambs to average £139.64.

Also at £154 were 15 quality Suffolk cross lambs from F S Vickers, Rennington South.

B A & A M Storrow & Sons sold 5 super sorts to £150, averaging £144.88 for another great run of lambs.

Blackface lambs sold well topping at £95 for 51 from G D Herdman, Edlingham Demesne.

Mules topped at £145 for 11 gimmer lambs from M J Dixon, The Stobbs. Messrs J Lee & Sons, Morley Hill sold 16 to £127 and 35 at £124 and M Wallace, Farneyshield brought his usual stamp selling 51 at £124.
