Hexham Sale of Store Cattle & Store Sheep

CATTLE

Hexham – 10th April

After the Easter break Hexham & Northern Marts had forward a good entry of 544 store cattle for their first sale in the spring month of April.  A sizeable catalogue encouraged a full ringside of buyers and all classes sold very well on the day despite a more mixed show of quality than of late.

The older ranks of cattle sold first saw sharper demand and the best of these sold considerably dearer than recent weeks.  The sale topped at £2900 for an exceptional and replete Blue cross Limmy heifer from The Moralee Men of Hard Riding, Bardon Mill who brought forward a trademark packet of well-bred females at 16-18 months that averaged a very worthy £2578 throughout.

The steer portion of the sale topped at a massive £2800 for a thumping great big Charolais cross from noted consignors The Telfer Brothers, Make Me Rich, Capheaton.  Renowned for their use of both Charolais and Limousin sires across their sizeable suckler herd the brothers also sold a super Limmy heifer to £2580 and averaged £2306 for fifteen head sold on the day.

Pure bred cattle always sell well through the store ring at Hexham and there are none better than the Charolais examples that come from Messrs Campbell of Thrunton who topped at £2780 for a sublime heifer followed by another three at £2540 to then average £2550 for five sold.

A good contingent of native breed cattle were presented and these continue to sell at a pace at Hexham. Angus cattle topped at £2760 for a super, bottle reared heifer from the youngest consignor on the day – Miss Rosie Hall of East Butsfield who, at just four years of age was just over twice the age of her heifer at 23 months which she had bottle reared herself – a promising start for one of the cattle farmers of the future.

It was an older hand that topped the black steer rankings and with a tremendous trio of angus bullocks at 24 months of age weekly consignor Philip Tomlinson highlighted the benefits of age and experience selling his one lot of three from Sunniside, Consett for £2560 each.  Similarly The Renners of Yetlington Farm, Whittingham followed with another at £2540 and their run of nine sold to level at £2260 per head.

Herefords too were well represented and peaked at £2580 from The Eggleston Family, Thornham Hill who averaged £2485 for four outstanding examples with another from John Carpenter, Rare Dene cashing at £2400.

The Luing breed is one which is growing in popularity amongst our upland producers and David & Annabelle Stanners, Low Chesterhope have earned a deserved reputation for the quality of their cattle which was strengthened on this day with their lead steer selling at a notable £2440.

Making a welcome return to the Hexham store ring after an absence of over a decade was Mr Tommy Thompson of Howick Seahouses, North Northumberland and his return was well-rewarded.  Topping at £2680 for an outstanding Charolais cross steer at just fifteen months and averaging £2493 for a trio of cracking bullocks consigned on the day Mr Thompson was delighted with his returns and enjoyed a considerable lift on efforts elsewhere earlier this month.

On to the younger classes of cattle and a useful show of both quality and quantity was met with a super trade that also showed a lift on two weeks earlier. With trade at a pace across all types of yearlings highlights were too great in number to mention in their entirety although standout consignments included a super run from The Hutchinsons of Lee Hall, Wark who saw their Limmy bullocks top at £2440 and level at a massive £2116 at 11-13 months.

The lone Scottish vendor to benefit from the Hexham ring on the day was longstanding customer Mr Martin Wallace, White Hills, Newton Stewart who brought his annual run of thirty Simmental and Blue cross bullocks to Tyne Green to top at £2200 and average £1907 with the majority selling to return purchasers.

Messrs Robinson, Burmoor, Wark presented a smart run of well-bred Limmy crosses that topped at £2080 for their lead steer and £1810 for the best heifer sister to then go on and level at £1753 per head for fifteen sold.

Steven Weatherley, Windy Hill has expanded his suckler cow enterprise in recent years and today brought out a useful load of eleven Limmy cross calves that scaled to £2190 for steers and £2120 for heifers and returned at a handsome £2074 much to his delight.

Within the yearling classes The Angus continues to command great rates and father and son team David & John Cheesebrough saw the full extent of the ‘Hexham effect’ selling their best black bullock at £2300 from Buildings Farm, Clara Vale.  Messrs Spours, Twizell are another North Northumberland family farming enterprise that have benefitted from a trip south to Hexham and their well-bred Angus heifers courted much attention to top at £1730 with a level pen of nine following at £1530 and the smart run of 21 averaging £1563 throughout.

Thomas Bullerwell is a regular supporter here at Hexham with his Spenside suckled calves and this day saw great reward for his steadfastness to the Hexham ring. A super Hereford cross bullock topped at £1960 at 12 months and with an Angus at £1855 his three on the day levelled at £1865 per head.

With grazing pastures continuing to flourish and the countryside taking on a distinct spring-like feel more and more finishers are looking to source cattle for the grass and next weeks sale is sure to carry on in the same vein of trade.  Kindly enter your cattle by 10:30am each Monday for inclusion on our Friday catalogues.
