Hexham Sale of Store Cattle & Store Sheep
CATTLE
Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of Store Cattle and Suckled Calves with an entry of 543 beast from across the North of England and the ever increasing number of cattle from the Scottish Borders. This weeks sale incorporated the special monthly sale for Native Cattle with a terrific offering of all ages forward.
Trade throughout this week would be slightly easier than the extreme trade seen for last weeks older, forward stores to coincide with the easing in the fat price. Highest beast on the day was the second animal put forward from Messrs Curry, Low Burradon with an excellent Pure Charolais heifer, realising £2680.00. A great run of Charolais cross steers from J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters sold to £2580.00 on two occasions. Regular Cumbrian consignor SWS Agri, Arnold House, Carlisle sold a fantastic run of Limousin cross steers to £2580.00 also. Another selling Limousin cross steers to £2580.00 was from I & A Hamilton, Claywalls.
Highest priced Native this week came from the run from SWS Agri, Arnold House, who sold Angus crosses to £2300.00 & £2280.00 and the same home sold Hereford crosses to £2280.00. Angus cross heifers sold to a high of £2260.00 from P Featherstone & Son, Allendale Farm.
A nice packet of Pure Galloway heifers from S H Spours & Son, Twizell were brought to Tyne Green and created great interest and sold to a high of £1860.00 for a smart pen of four.
An increased entry of younger stores this week especially grazing type cattle met a competitive trade but potential purchasers buying more cautiously. T D Wight & Son, Fairnigton, Melsrose jumped on “Hutch’s highway” down to Hexham and sold 11 month Limousin cross steers to £2160.00. This was closely followed by regular North Tyne producers, T Hutchinson & Sons, Lee Hall who sold a great run of weaned stores to £2120.00.
Topping the weaned native trade with a fabulous run of proper hill bred Hereford cross calves was T E Stephenson, Burntshield Haugh which peaked at £1890.00. Holystone Estates, Farnham sold 11-month-old Angus cross heifers to a high of £1700.00 .
Wilson Bros, Ingram brought their third run of Angus bred weaned calves and sold a pen of five to £1640.00.

Topping the sale at £282 was a Beltex ewe from J & L Thompson, Buckshaw.

Suffolk Cross Ewes sold to £230 for a pair from Foley Bros, Mirlaw House.
Bluefaced Leicester Ewes sold to £230 from Mr I Potts, Redburn.
At £220 were Mule Ewes from Foley Bros, Mirlaw House.
Blackface Ewes sold to £150 for a trio from A & S Murray & Son, West Deanraw. At £148 was another pair of Blackface Ewes from D Carr & Son, Highwood.

A pen of 29 super Swaledale Hoggs made £171 from W Parker & Sons, Spital Shield
