Hexham Sale of Store Cattle & Cast Sheep
CATTLE
Hexham and Northern Marts held its final sale of April with a catalogued entry of 490 Store Cattle and Weaned calves and this week incorporated the monthly section for Young Bulls. Forward and older store cattle met the same trade as the previous week with some resistance from potential purchasers with the reduction in finishing values.
Five beasts shared the weeks leading price of £2500.00. The first to achieve this was weekly consignor G & EA Herdman, Luns House with a Limousin cross steer. This was then matched by a pair of 14-month-old Limousin cross steers from North Tyne producers; M W & C M Ridley, Shitlington Hall. Finally, another pair of Limousin cross steers towards the end of the sale and proving being sold later is not a disadvantage, was R & J Crammond, Armond Carr.
Leading the heifer trade was Hexhamshire stockwoman, Hazel Clarke, Holly Hill West with a stylish Limousin cross selling to £2360.00. Not far behind was a Hereford cross heifer from regular Cumbrian consignors J R & G Forster, Brackenthwaite which sold to £2320.00.
The younger yearling cattle met a better-than-expected trade and very much in line or slightly better than other efforts that have been observed across the country this past week. The better end of Continental bred steers cashed easily in excess of £1900.00 whilst heifer regularly passed £1700.00.
Leading the younger cattle trade this week was a fantastic run of Limousin and Blue cross steers and heifers from Richard and Chris Thornton, Cornhills. These saw a high of £2360.00 for a Limousin cross steer, whilst Blue cross steers cashed to £2270.00. Taking full advantage of the competitive Hexham ring for native bred weaned calves was F Hall & Son, East Butsfield who sold year old Angus cross steers to £2100.00.
A large entry of weaned and yearling heifers this week and these peaked at £2200.00 for a pair of very desirable black Limousin cross heifers from a marvelous run of forty Limousin cross weaned calves from Stephen and Jack Weatherley, Windy Hill. Tow Law consignor, R & J Crammond, Armond Carr cashed a smart 11-month-old black Limousin cross for £2020.00.

A wide range of Bulls forward this week which met a good trade for the stamp of Bulls forward with plenty of competition ringside to ensure the best returns possible. These sold to a high of £2420.00 for a lump of a Limousin cross from G N Potts & Son, Black Callerton. Holystone Estates, Low Farnham sold thick set Charolais cross bulls to £2180.00 and Angus crosses to £2060.00. Nilston Rigg Farms, Langley sold a nice run of weaned Limousins which sold very well and to a high of £2000.00 twice for eight-month-old bulls.
