Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of Store Cattle and Suckled Calves with a catalogued entry of 334 quality cattle drawn from across the North of England, alongside an increasing number travelling south across the Scottish Border to take advantage of the competitive Hexham ring.
Forward cattle sold exceptionally well and met a stronger-than-anticipated trade, despite the ongoing squeeze from major beef processors. Vendors certainly did not fall foul of the Friday the 13th superstitions, leaving extremely pleased with their day’s trading.
- Store Bullocks averaged a remarkable £2,208.10
- Store Heifers levelled at £1,951.21
Leading Prices
Topping the sale was a tremendous Black Limousin cross steer from GR Scott & Son, Corneyside, which realised £2,720.00. The same home sold other steers to £2,670.00 and heifers to £2,420.00.
The highest-priced native this week was a powerful Aberdeen Angus cross steer from regular consignors DA, P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields, achieving £2,540.00.
Once again all classes of heifers were in real demand once again, leading this section and crossing the Carter Bar, making a very successful first trip down from Peebles was C & S Napier, Burnhead Farm who sold a smart Black Limousin cross to £2600.00.
Another jumping on Hutch’s convoy out the Borders was T D Wight & Son, Whitrighill who sold some smart Blue roan Limousin cross heifers to £2500.00 and others to £2410.00.
Carlisle-based producer SWS Agri, Arnold House enjoyed an excellent day, with Charolais and Simmental cross heifers peaking at £2,530.00, while steers from the same consignment reached £2,570.00.
A big, stretchy Angus cross heifer from WR Sparke & Son, Little Swinburne sold to £2,500.00.
Yearlings & Weaned Cattle
In the second half of the catalogue, yearling and weaned cattle continued to sell to a consistent and competitive trade at Tyne Green.
Despite being the final lot through the ring, demand remained strong for North Tyne producer T Nixon & Son, Longlee, whose year-old Limousin crosses sold to:
- £2,420.00 for a smart British Blue cross heifer
- £2,390.00 for a Limousin cross steer
Regular consignors G H Walton, Greyside brought their usual stamp of quality Limousin cross yearlings, which were highly sought after, selling to £2,380.00 for a stylish steer and £2,340.00 for another.
James Forster, East Wharmley brought another consignment of 8 month old Charolais heifers which once again saw great demand and sold very well peaking at £1710.00.
Holystone Estates, Farnham brought their usual great stamp of weaned Angus and Charolais cross cattle turned out to perfection by Stockman Stuart Robertson and these saw a high of £1990.00 for Angus cross steers and £1890.00 for Charolais crosses.

Breeding Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its monthly breeding cattle sale which included the dispersal of the Tedcastle herd on behalf of WN & JC Gilhespy.
Before the dispersal a handful of heifers with calves at foot went under the hammer and sold to £3000.00 for a Limousin cross with a Lim x heifer calf from G S Grey & Sons, Dunston Square.

The company was favored to offer the Tedcastle herd for sale which regularly consigns quality weaned and yearling cattle here throughout the year. A herd that predominantly consists of first cross dairy types and commanded a fantastic crowd of prospective purchasers and onlookers.
Firstly the Autumn calved cows and calves were offered and sold to a high of £3950.00 for a very smartly marked red cow with a white strip with a heifer calf at foot, this being Iain’s daughter, Lexi’s favorite selling to £3950.00 and find a new home with John and Lindsay Baxter, The Monk. The twenty-five outfits went on to average £2950.00.
The spring calving, in calf cows saw even greater demand with some smarter ¾ Limousin bred types amongst them and saw a high of £4700.00 for a very smart Black 6.5 year old Limousin cross selling to Messrs Lee, Agars Hill. The twenty four in calf cows went on to average £2796.05.
Five smart in calf heifers that are due in April were well presented and these sold to £3500.00 for a Simmental cross selling to W & R Hall, Allensgreen. Blue cross heifers sold to £3300.00.
Nine heifers that have ran with the bull since December were offered and these sold to £2480.00 for a pen of three Hereford crosses.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1223 Cast Ewes & Rams to another nice trade with a competitive ring of buyers all keen for stock.
Topping the sale at £345 was a Texel ewe from C & C Farming, Flotterton Cottage.
At £328 was a Texel from R R E Robson, Allenheads who also sold ewes at £308.
Texel x ewes sold to £295 from W C & E Bell & Son, Low Houses.
Suffolk ewes sold to £270 twice from J & J Farming.
Rouge ewes sold to £248 from Reay & Walton, St Oswalds.
Suffolk x ewes sold to £214 from R H Thompson & Son, Fitches Grange.
Cheviot ewes sold to £180 for 11 from J Thompson, Smallburns who also sold 36 Blackface ewes at £165.
Mule ewes sold to £172 for a trio from W H Smith & Sons, West Shields.
Not far away was 10 Blackface ewes at £162 from J Hunter & Sons, The Steel.
A very lean show of Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £118 for 9 fed sorts from N & P Rutherford, Irestone.

Hexham & Northern Marts witnessed a varied and weathered show of In-lamb Breeding Sheep.
Sale top of £270 for coloured Ryeland ewes from W N & J C Gilhespy, Tedcastle.
Aged Mule ewes from R J & J Raine, Townfoot went on to achieve £208 a head.
Out with the in-lamb ewes, a section of Teaser and Breeding Tups achieved a top of £255 for Charolais and £370 for Texels respectively.

Store Hoggs
Hexham and Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 2334 Store Hoggs to a scorching trade achieving an all in average of £117.58 which includes over 800 Cheviots, Mule, Blackface and Swale Hoggs.
Topping the sale at £200 twice was a Texel cross Hogg very kindly donated by Mr K Forsyth, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support and DEBRA UK. This was kindly purchased by great Hexham supporters Mr B Haigh & Mr W Dodd.
Beltex cross hoggs skyed to £182 from A S Whitfield, Low Castle Dene, this home averaged £158.43 for 40 outstanding white faced hoggs.
Suffolk x hoggs reached £150 from D Ashbridge, Wingates Moor. G & J H Tomlinson & Son brought 92 powerful hoggs to Hexham to return a pleasing average of £134.45.
D Fletcher & D Coates, Shortthorns reached £148 for 7 smart Texel x hoggs and averaged £144 for a smart run of continental hoggs.
Cheviot hoggs sold to glorious rates, peaking at £128 for 16 from T W & E Tennant & Son, Shaws Farm. F T Walton, Flotterton filled the ring with 100 Cheviots which went on to reach £125.
Horned hoggs reached £128 from J Hunter & Sons, The Steel.
