Breeding Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts held their annual prize show and sale of beef breeding cattle and offered a good entry of 222 head of quality suckler beef outfits including three noted herd dispersals from across the region.
The show was once again genrously sponsored by Lloyds Bank and expertly judged by well-known Midlothian herdmaster Mr Mark Ross, Wester Middleton, Gorebridge who gave each and every class his due consideration before arriving at his results as follows;

The Overall Championship and the John Riddle trophy was awarded to the tremendously correct and upstanding first prize Limousin cross heifer and her heifer calf exhibited by The Foley Bros. Mirlaw House, Capheaton. The three-quarter bred heifer and her smart heifer calf comprised to make a superb outfit which caught the eye of all in the market and went on to top the sale at £3700 selling to the judge.
The Reserve Champion award went to the second place Limmy pair – another super outfit from Messrs Teasdale, Lynesack farm, Copley, Bishop Auckland and this sparkling pairing also tempted the judge who secured these also at £2800, taking them home North of The Border.
Trade for heifers and calves was in general marginally sharper than the same sale last year and with a good crowd of local suckled calf purveyors at the ringside that have benefitted from a good trade themselves through the same ring of late the leading consignors all saw significant lifts in value.
One third of the entire heifer and calf entry sold in excess of Three Thousand Pounds and with increasing premiums available through the Hexham store cattle ring this season it was evident that a number of leading high-end producers had set their stall out to take home only the very best replacements available.
A small but very useful entry of In Calf Heifers presented sold to a high of £2000.00 from Messrs Foley Brothers, Mirlaw House Farm for an Angus cross heifer due to the Limousin Bull in the spring.
Cows & Calves sold relatively well, especially outfits containing stronger claves. Highest priced Cow & Calf came out of the dispersal of Oxley Farm Ltd, Colwell Hill, with a powerful 2014 Angus cross cow with a heifer calf at foot realising £2500.
The entry of in calf cows was predominantly made up of cows from the dispersal of S E Harrison & Son, Twizell Hall Farm, calving late autumn that sold to £1420 for a Charolais cross cow, in calf to the Blonde d’Aquitaine.
