Hexham Sale of Store Cattle & Cast Sheep

Hexham – 27th March

Hexham & Northern Marts held their final sale of store cattle in the month of March and offered an increased entry of 424 head.  Larger numbers attracted a larger crowd at the ringside and all classes were dearer on the week, in particular younger aged cattle.

The sale peaked at £2780 for a super Blue cross heifer from Messrs Carr Camphill with the lead steer following closely at £2770 – this one a Limmy cross bullock from Messrs Hamilton, Claywalls.

A Trio of Angus bullocks sold well from Messrs Tomlinson, Sunniside and topped at £2580 twice with the third close behind at £2560.

Messrs Storey, Startup Farm often favour the Hexham store ring at this time of year and brought forward a super run of 12 home-bred Limmy bullocks at 15/16 months which peaked at £2630 and averaged £2463 for the delighted Ponteland based producers.

Returning to the Hexham ring with a super run of yearling Charolais crosses was Mr Alec Brown, Dunstan Hill, North Northumberland and a little extra distance travelled to the Tyne Green marketplace was rewarded with an outstanding trade throughout. Buyers were keen for the well-bred cattle and pushed bullocks to a whopping £2640 with heifer sisters scaling to £2300 for a pen of three which resulted in a thoroughly deserved average of £2132 per head for fifty-eight cattle sold on the day.

With a determined and driven canvassing policy in place increasing numbers of yearling cattle from North of The Border are being sold to advantage through the Hexham ring. Messrs Rennie, Berryhill came back to Hexham from their Kelso based holding and once again were rewarded for the extra miles down the A68.  Their best bullock scaled to £1980 and with heifers selling to £1860 their eight sold levelled at £1827 per head.

Likewise, The Upperburnmouth Partners enjoyed their last trip to Tyne Green from Newcastleton and returned with another shapely six that saw steers climb to £1890 twice but it was their heifers that rang the bell at a top of £2140 to compliment an average of £1935 for their cool half dozen.

Additionally, Messrs Crocket, Craigsford Mains, Earlston consigned a nice packet of Saler crosses and topped at £2080 for their lead steer to average £1887 for seven steers and heifers sold on the day.  Messrs Wardrop, Hardenmains brought a shapely half dozen heifers over The Bar from Jedburgh and topped at £1880 to average a worthy £1760 for their ‘lovely limmy cross lassies’.  Also Messrs Pickford, Marchcleugh, Morebattle topped at £2140 for their Limmy bred bullocks and a smart run of steers and heifers returned at £1760 per head.

Should any Borders based producers wish to take advantage of the ‘Hutchy Express’ to Hexham then Andrew Hutcheson (07955 275403) and indeed any of our team of auctioneers would be only too pleased to take your call.

As always a staunch bedrock of local producers consign cattle that attract buyers to the ringside and this week was no exception – John & Philip Ogle, Wydon, Haltwhistle brought out a smart run of yearling types and peaked at £2330 for Charolais cross steers and £2040 for a heifer sister.  Craig Armin, Tanfield Lane brought a cracking quintet of pure bred Limmy steers and these always sell well topping on this day at £2200 to average £2102 at just 12 months.

It often pays to have a ‘look over the gate’ and Messrs Collingwood, Ambling Gate, Weardale did just that to great effect. Their well-bred calves topped at £2080 for their lead steer and £1800 for a smart heifer, both by the limmy bull, to average £1912 for five sold on the day.  Another was Rob Campbell, Moorhouse Gate, Allendale whose suckler operation goes from strength to strength and despite taking his turn later on the catalogue Rob was pleased to sell steers to £2010 and heifers to £1720 to round off another good days trading on Tyne Green.

With the Easter weekend resulting in the annual Good Friday holiday the next store sale at Hexham will be on 10th April and with longer days turning thoughts to filling grazing pastures the auctioneers look forward to an encouraging catalogue which is sure to meet with enthusiastic demand.  Call Chris Armstrong on 07808 721957 or Drew Patrick on 07854 361967 or the main office on 01434 605444 to enter cattle at any point over the next ten days.

Young Bulls

Hexham and Northern Marts’ monthly Young Bulls section, held on the final Friday of the month, met a strong trade with keen competition throughout for a full entry of native‑bred bulls. The sale peaked at £2,620 for a big, thick‑set Angus cross bull from J D Straughan, Dalton Hill Head. A standout run of pure Angus bulls, aged 10–11 months, from JL & M Wilkinson & Son, Bollihope Shield, topped at £2,060, with others close behind at £1,980. New customer J Williamson, East Cottage, also enjoyed a strong debut, selling 11‑month‑old Hereford cross bulls to £1,960, underlining continued buyer confidence in the Young Bulls trade at this centre.

Many more Bulls can be sold in this centre to producers’ advantage; we are actively seeking more for the sale at the end of April.
