Store Cattle

Hexham And Northern Marts held its special annual sale of Limousin bred store cattle and suckled calves, kindly sponsored by Lloyd Allroad, Farmers Guardian and Tarff Agricultural Merchants. This years pre sale show was expertly judged by renowned Scottish finisher, Mr W Dandie esq. Learielaw Farm, Broxburn.

Firstly Mr Dandie judged the pens of four and awarded the North Western Limousin Cattle Breeders Trophy to Messrs I & A Hamiliton, Claywalls for a very smart pen of red bullocks. The pen went on to realise £1860.00 to Hargreaves Farms, Preston.

Best four Limousin steer calves – 1st prize I & A Hamilton, Claywalls

Taking the individual championship and George Stappard Memorial Challenge Cup was an outstanding Pure Limousin heifer from Miss Gemma Common, Low Ardley. Reserve prize went to the second placed heifer from Messrs Lee, Agars Hill.

Both Champion and Reserve went under the hammer at 12 noon, the champion went on to realise £1880.00 to Cole Hill Farm Ltd, Hartlepool. The Reserve went on to sell for a handsome £1560.00 selling to Mr L Bainbridge, Greystones Farm, Seamer.

Also sold at noon was a steer that was kindly donated by David and Sharon Robinson, Hawksteel, with proceeds going to the Great North Air Ambulance. The steer went on to realise £1400.00 to Mr W D Howard, Springwood.

As usual the sale began with older and forward stores which saw an electric trade with extreme returns achieved and trade for the quality cattle on offer continued right to the end leaving a very healthy sale average of £1388, this is an increase of £132 for 41 more sold compared to 2022.

The sale was lead by a thumping black steer from father and son team Chris and Andrew Johnson of Messrs H Clark & Sons, Paxton Dene selling to £2270.00. The same home also topped the table for the heifers selling a well fleshed red Limousin x heifer to £2140.00. The Longhorsley based family went on to average an eye watering £2092.22 for their great run of steers and heifers.

Selling another fine run of cattle was Messrs I & A Hamilton, Claywalls who sold an outstanding run or Limousin x and Charolais x steers to peak at £2250.00 for a Limousin with another three beasts bursting the £2000.00 barrier.

Coming down the side of the A68 from altitude was father and son team, Graham and James Thompson, Springwell Cottage who had a marvellous run of 14–18-month-old steers and heifers which sold to £1980.00 for a very stylish blue roan heifer.  

Also using the best of Limousin genetics was Messrs R Thornton & Sons, Cornhills who sold steers to £1750.00 for the second prize winning pen of four steers. Heifers from this home were sought after by both feeders and breeding purchasers and peaked at £1800.00, the Thorntons’ run of twenty-eight steers and heifers went on to average £1568.57.

Best four Limousin steer calves – 2nd prize Messrs R Thornton & Son, Cornhills

A fabulous run of sixty cattle from Messrs T Common & Son, Low Ardley out of Hexhamshire was observed selling to £1780.00 for yearling steers and heifers to £1620.00, leaving father and daughter duo, Graham and Gemma, a healthy average of £1408.00 for sixty. This is an eye-watering rise of £197 on the year.

Messrs J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill brought their annual consignment of fifty-five, year old Limousin cross steers and heifers which were sought after by high end finishers from across the length and breadth of the British Isles. The run was headed by an outstanding black steer at £1750.00 and heifers to £1560.00 for the reserve champion beast on the day. The Whitfield family remarkably saw a rise on last years outstanding average, leveling at £1392.00 for fifty-five.

Making the long and profitable journey south, over the Carter Bar from Peebleshire was H Cockburn & Partners, Kingside who sold year old Limousin x steers to £1910.00 and heifers of the same age to £1720.00, leaving brothers Tom and Blair extremely satisfied with their days trading on Tyne Green seeing a rise of £179 on the year.

The younger cattle on the day were just as dear as the older beasts and saw an average of £1191 for steers and heifers 10 months and younger. This was topped at £1540.00 for a Limousin steer and being one of the last beasts through the ring from Michael Murray of Messrs K Mitchelson, Dene House. With almost 1000 head catalogued for next weeks traditional “Bellingham” sale of spring born suckled calves, this fills the auctioneers with enthusiasm and anticipation for the premier sale in the north of England of its kind.

Topping the sale was a pen of 4 Beltex x lambs at £167 from Mr C R Fawcett, Well House, who also sold 11 Beltex x lambs at £149 and 9 at £147.
