Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a useful entry for the time of year at 138 catalogued head including the monthly special sale of native breeds.

Leading the trade this week was a super run of bullocks from weekly consignors Messrs Herdman, Luns House, Consett who peaked at £1900 for a tremendous Limmy cross bullock at 22 months and averaged a mighty £1796 for six similar types sold on the day.

The native trade was topped by another run of well-bred Coquet valley Angus bullocks from Martin Snaith who sold a superb pen of five thumping black beast at £1880 being considerably dearer on the week to then average £1730 for 15 great cattle consigned to the Hexham ring.

The female trade was also buoyant and peaked at £1840 for a hefty Blue cross lady from The Waltons of Greyside who brought yet another load of first-class cattle to Tyne Green.  With an ever present following of buyers keen at the ringside the Newbrough based family of stockmen saw their yearling type bullocks peak at £1760 and heifer sisters rise to £1610 to average a whopping £1591 for thirteen steers and ten heifers sold to great advantage.

Also making the headlines were a great pen full of Hereford cross bullocks from noted local purveyor of red and white native sired cattle; Alan Parker, High Woolley, Allendale who concisely consigned six in two lots of three.  The quality offerings sold well at £1790 and £1630 each proving that on these special monthly sales and indeed on any week of the year native breed cattle now stand level and equal in terms of value and demand at Hexham alongside their continental counterparts.

With the weather taking a distinct turn for the better this week seasonal operations will no doubt take precedence however our auctioneers are actively seeking cattle both for our weekly sale and on a farm to farm basis and would welcome contact from any producers with cattle that they may wish to market.
