Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern marts held its weekly catalogued sale of 218 store cattle and suckled calves. A sale that consisted of an extremely varied show of cattle, with something for everyone’s taste available.

An extremely competitive trade was observed this week with fresh faces ringside. Feeding cattle especially those hailing out of the dairy bred mother, extremely easily cashed with cattle forward from across Cumbria, Northumberland, County Durham and the Scottish Borders taking full advantage of the Tyne Green ring.

Older cattle started the days trading as usual and leading the sale were two renowned Coquetdale producers this week. Returning and taking full advantage of a ringful of buyers was Mr WM Davy, Warton who sold Charolais cross steers to £1930.00 and £1880.00. This was closely followed by Messrs AJ & T Snaith, Great Tosson who had a great run of Angus cross steers, heifers and young bulls which peaked at £1780.00 twice for pens of steers.

Messrs DA & P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields brought their usual strong stamp of Angus bred cattle and sold steers to £1770.00 and £1720.00.

Returning and reaping the benefits of the competitive ring was Messrs GT & ME Tweddle, Springwell Farm who sold a pair of Angus steers to £1700.00.

The quality of heifers this week was limited and the trade for heifers was topped by a terrific year-old black Limousin cross heifer from Mr JE Carruthers, Silloans that changed hands at £1560.00.

SWS Agri, Arnold House, Carlisle made another successful trip east along the A69 and sold Charolais cross heifers to £1540.00 and dairy bred Angus heifers to £1500.00.

Leading the weaned calves section was one of the last through the ring on the day, a great eight month old Limousin cross steer from Messrs F & M Moore, Highside which went on to cash at £1400.00.

With plenty of optimism ringside, more cattle are urgently sought after on a weekly basis to fulfill demand at this centre.
