Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their first sale of store cattle for the summer and offered a smaller entry of 164 head which is typical for the time of year.  A mixed entry of both age and quality met a steady demand throughout despite fewer faces at the ringside; also typical for the time of year.

The sale peaked at £1970 for the best of this weeks offering from The Woodman family, Great Chesters – a big black Limousin cross bullock at 20 months of age and well furnished with flesh and archetypal of the cattle from these Roman Wall producers who sold 16 bullocks to return £1733 per head and 19 heifer sisters to level at £1623 throughout.

Angus cattle topped at £1780 from the mouth of The River Rede at Bellingham, this one being a bullock at 22 months consigned by noted purveyor of the black breed Thomas Scott.

Heifers retained a great deal of demand and these were topped on the day at £1770 for an outstanding Beef Shorthorn cross lady at 20 months from Messrs Wales, Thackwood, Raughton Head, Cumbria who also sold another at £1730 and averaged a worthy £1578 for 7 heifers sold to advantage through the Hexham ring.

Also benefitting from the trade at the weekly sale at this centre were The Davy Family, Warton, Thropton who consigned six forward heifers by the Charolais bull and saw a useful return for their efforts. Their lead beast scaled to £1680 and with another at £1650 the handy half dozen sold well for the Coquet Valley Cattlemen on the day.

Cattle the middle age bracket also sold well and peaked at £1590 for a Limmy heifer from Messrs Dixon, Middle Heads, Consett whilst bullocks topped at £1560 for a similarly well-bred steer from Clive Kellet, East Matfen. Also in this age class was a super run of cattle from David Teasdale, Grindon Hill That topped at £1430 for three shapely steers and £1300 for a heifer sister to round off another successful days trading at Hexham.
