Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham Mart held its final weekly sale of Store Cattle and Weaned calves for May with 279 catalogued. It was a typical end of May run of cattle with many producers now coming to the end of their spring offering making for a plainer show forward than previous weeks.

Stronger cattle once again sold extremely well considering the decline in prime values recently but contrary to some other fictional reports, trade would mirror the national trend and be slightly easier on the week.

Leading the sale once again was renowned stockman Ian Hamilton of Claywalls who sold Charolais cross steers to £2110.00 and Limousin crosses to £2070.00. The same home generated the top priced native beast on the day also, selling Angus bullocks to £1940.00.

Messrs J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters once again brought their usual quality of Limousin and Charolais bred cattle and sold cross bred Limousin Bulls to £1970.00 and heifers to £1880.00.

Younger cattle cashed away nicely considering that most grazers have now found adequate numbers and some of the steers especially could be slightly dearer on the week. Tenter House Farms, West Woodburn took their turn and sold last on the day and led the trade for the yearling cattle, selling 12 month old Charolais steers to £1560.00 and then with one of the last beasts through the ring today topped the heifers in this section with a Charolais cross selling to £1510.00.

Mr K Hall, West Butsfield once again sold great yearling Angus cross yearling cattle and cashed away at £1530.00 and heifers of the same age to £1460.00.
