Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a smaller entry of 503 catalogued head consigned by vendors from across the Northern counties of Northumberland, County Durham & Cumbria.

With the overall quality on offer now easing somewhat and summer pastures almost filled to requirement trade at Hexham has remained buoyant and the renowned continuity of the suckler bred cattle available every week has maintained a full ringside of buyers throughout this traditional month of turnout.

Topping the sale this week was a super Limmy bullock at just fifteen months of age from brothers Frank & Reg Simpson, Square House, Quebec, County Durham which scaled to £2070 lead their super pen full which saw several others in excess of £1800 at the same age and a cracking average of £1773 for ten great bullocks sold.

Next in the rankings were not one but two big Angus cross bullocks from The Watsons of Holywell; the first changed hands at £1940 and with another at £1900 the North Tyneside producers were well rewarded for their efforts on the day averaging £1702 throughout for a solid load of five steers.

Heifers remain sought after and peaked at £1860 twice; the first from John Carruthers, Silloans, Rochester was a powerful and square Blue cross followed later in the day by a different and extremely shapely Limmy cross with trademark style from Andy Thompson, East Unthank, Haltwhistle.

The Woodman family of Great Chesters continued their May marketing spree with yet another hefty and well-bred load of forward cattle that saw Charolais cross steers top at £1900 with their heifer sisters changing hands at £1820.  Limmy crosses from the same home topped with heifers at £1830 for a superb pen of four whilst bullocks followed at £1820 to complete yet another sound days trading for the Haltwhistle based producers of renown.

The mid-age bracket of cattle at 11-17 months were dominated by The Square House consignment however other highlights were evident – Messrs Grix, Whalton Hillhead saw the full benefit of the Hexham ring with bullocks at £1820 and £1700.

The Blonde cross bloodlines of Brownsleazes are always a sure-fire attraction at Hexham and Robert & John English saw £1800 for their best heifer with bullocks to £1720 and a great Limmy lady selling to £1700. Not to be outdone the native contingent in this class were on a par and following a great demand last week the best of these continue to fly.  Alan Parker, High Woolley, Allendale is noted for his well-grown Hereford crosses and topped at £1710 for a pair of steers and averaged £1602 for eight on the day.

The youngest class of weanling calves saw a top of £1440 for a ten-month-old steer from Edward Dean, Kirk House, Brampton and with an older heifer cashing at £1520 the Cumbrian purveyor averaged a worthy £1424 for seven sold through the Hexham ring. The Gibsons of Thornton Tower sold Limmy steers to £1380 and heifers to £1180 to average a mighty £1242 for 19 sold at similar ages bred on the tops above Newbrough.  Charles Nixon, Longlea brought another great run of cattle down The Warks Burn and traded steers to £1140 twice and with a smashing heifer at £1360 attained a deserved average of £1123 for 15 calves sold from 10-12 months of age.

The final sale of May will be held next Friday and entries should be directed to our auctioneers over the bank holiday weekend or to the main office by noon on Tuesday 28th for inclusion on the catalogue.
