Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

The great weekly entries continue here at Hexham with new and returning customers selecting the centre to market their cattle, resulting in a terrific offering of 819 store cattle and suckled calves. Also incorporated within this week’s sale, was the special monthly sale for native bred cattle, this resulted in over ¾ of the sale consisting of native breed beasts.

A very competitive trade was witnessed once again with new purchasers opting for Hexham to procure quality cattle for both finishing and grazing, leaving vendors delighted with their days trading.

Leading today’s sale and dominating the forward cattle trade was an outstanding run of continental bred steers from Messrs I & A Hamiliton, Claywalls. The renowned mid Northumbrian producers peaked at £2180.00 for a tremendous Limousin cross steer and cashed British Blue cross steers to £2120.00. The native challenge came in Angus form from Messrs DA & P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields with a single steer cashing at £1940.00. A pair of outwintered Angus steers from Mr W Bliss, Sandy Braes realised £1900.00.

Topping the heifer trade was a terrific red Limousin cross heifer forward from Messrs J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters which changed hands at £2000.00. A pen of four Charolais bred heifers from the same home went on to cash at £1880.00.

Angus bred heifers peaked at £1780.00 on two occasions, firstly from Mr K Hall, West Butsfield with a thirteen-month-old beauty, this was followed by a pen of three later in the day from JL & HR Gledson, Buteland.

A great show of genuine grazing cattle this week which sold easily once again with one of the day’s highlights being a fabulous run of Angus and Beef Shorthorn bred hill cattle from the top of the Otterburn ranges from Messrs W S Robson & Co, Yatesfield. Their run peaked at £1740.00 for a fifteen-month-old Angus cross steer. Brother’s Selby and Robbie filled the ring on more than one occasion but what was a sight to behold was a pen of ten yearling Angus steers, lotted like peas in a pod, and went on to change hands at £1460.00.

Weaned calves again very easily sold at Hexham with many vendors flabbergasted at their trade. Eight-month-old Limousin cross steers from Messrs J R Robinson & Son, Warksfield Head sold to £1460.00.

Again Hexham proves to be leading the way in marketing younger native cattle with Mr R N Armstrong, Ricknall Mill Farm, Newton Aycliffe cashing seven month old Angus cross steers to £1300.00 and £1280.00 respectively.

A lovely run of 10–12-month pure bred Angus heifers from the renowned Stouphill herd of Mr W D Allen, Humbleheugh went on to sell to £1400.00.

With all classes continuing to sell well here at Hexham with no let up in trade compared to other outlets, we invite entries for next weeks sale over the weekend with Auctioneers Drew Patrick 07854361967 or Chris Armstrong 07808721957 or to the office Monday morning on 01434 605444.
