Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their special ‘May Term’ sale of store cattle and offered for sale a great catalogue of exactly 900 head representing a sizeable increase on the same sale held last year.

With cattle consigned by no fewer than 83 vendors from across the noted stock rearing counties of Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria and The Scottish Borders a good crowd assembled at the ringside.  Trade for the best of each class was in-line with that seen the previous week however in general the quality on offer was hardly as impressive with a number of commentators remarking that things looked ‘dearer’.

The sale peaked at £2120 for another ‘stonker’ and the lead Limmy Bullock from the second run of Messrs Woodman, Great Chesters this season, that saw their Charolais peak at £2060 and heifers reach £1900 and £1960 respectively to cap another great days trading for The Roman Wall based family that sold 31 cattle to average £1874 throughout.

Angus cattle topped at £1960 for a huge black beast from Adrian Hutchinson, Hollin Close which suggests demand for such sorts at next weeks monthly sale of native breeds.

Seldom seen amongst the top rankings on such days British Blue crosses were also to the fore and topped at £1940 for a big square bullock from Martin & Angus White, Steel Hall whilst heifers ran to £1920 for a shining example and one that will no doubt fulfil a breeding destiny for noted purveyors and Hexham regulars Messrs Carr, Camphill.  John & John Junior enjoyed a flying trade with bullocks to £1800 and with another heifer at £1700 proved that Hexham is indeed ‘The’ place to sell top quality, suckler bred cattle and averaged a mighty £1657 for eight heifers and two steers sold on the day at 18/19 months.

Cattle in the 11-17 month age bracket were good to sell and topped on three occasions at £1860 – the first for another Blue cross bullock; this one from Robert & John English, Brownsleazes; then again for a Limmy cross from Ian Crammond, Armond Carr and finally for another and one of a fantastic run and the annual consignment to this sale from Lewis Forster, West Nubbuck.  Mr Forster also sold heifer sisters to £1760, twice and saw his 63 head strong run find new owners – many being return purchasers with 28 steers levelling at £1521 and 35 heifers returning a healthy £1389 per head on the day.

The youngest class – ‘Weanlings’ at ten months and younger also continued in the same vein of trade and topped at £1680 for two super Charolais cross steers from The Lumley Family of Newbiggen. Limmys traded to £1580 from Charles Nixon, Longlea and to £1500 from Richard Thornton, Cornhills.  Heifers saw a good trade too and reached £1500 from The Waltons of Burnbank for a super smart Limousin cross whilst Longlea also traded at £1420 and £1350.  Andrew Reay, Moorhouses sold the dearest Blues in this class with two well-bred heifers that climbed to £1340 for the Matfen man.

With a distinct lift in temperature and the countryside now displaying a pleasant and different hue of green – not seen for many months thoughts now turn to next weeks monthly special sale of native breed cattle.  With customers still keen for cattle to turn out onto grass the auctioneers urge vendors of both native and continental type cattle to contact either Chris (07808 721957) or Drew (07854 361967) over the weekend or by noon on Monday to lodge their entry for inclusion on the catalogue.
