Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a catalogued entry of 552 head which included over 200 head of spring born suckled calves for the second ‘Bellingham’ sale of such animals being the last special sale of the traditional back-end sales calendar.

A sound entry of older store cattle sold early in the day and these continued at levels witnessed over the last few weeks.  This section was dominated by a fantastic run of home-bred Limousin cross steers at 18-20 months of age from The Ridley Family, Shitlington Hall who topped the sale at £1780, twice, for two outstanding bullocks with shape, length, weight and cover.  Several weekly purchasers of high-end cattle were all keen to take these ones home although the spoils were shared between three dedicated finishers and staunch Hexham supporters from Northumberland and North Yorkshire which saw Melvin, Celia, Kevin & Steven enjoy a prosperous trade to occupy ten of the top prices and average a prosperous £1661 for fourteen shining examples sold on the day.

Cattle of quality continue to command top rates through the Hexham ring and heifers are no exception with many far exceeding vendors expectations.  Messrs Temple, Low Hall, Ingoe topped the female offering with a Limmy cross heifer at 20 months which cashed at £1570 whilst John Lamb, Town Farm Ltd, sold another, similarly well-bred and shapely lady at just 16 months for £1560 and his run of seven levelled at £1331 throughout for the noted Wall producer.

The older half of the sale, those cattle from 10 months of age and older averaged a solid £1155 throughout before the offering of younger sucklers were brought forward.

The entry of suckled calves were consigned from the far reaches of both Northumberland and County Durham, from the hills and dales that make up the bedrock of the customers base at Hexham.  With a great many such sales of these types held during the last few weeks sheds and order books appear to have been filled with a noticeable easing of trade since the first sale, which has been evident at other centres also.  The best end of the 9-10 month old, three-quarter bred offering were still able to obtain a premium however younger, plainer bred types were harder to place.

The Huddleston Brothers, Round Meadows topped the class with a tremendous Limmy bullock at £1440 and their best seven steers returning at a noteworthy £1248 per head.  Top quality heifers similarly were sought after and the best of these saw the same demand as a month ago. Dennis & Stuart Charlton, Whiteside led the female trade and sold three separate heifers, all of the same stamp for which The Roman Wall based family are renowned and all at £1420 to the same County Durham based purchaser; a regular at the Hexham ringside for the best females at this age. Messrs Charlton lead steer was knocked down at £1410 and with another at £1360 they averaged a thumping £1308 for seven steers and a staggering £1385 for their four heifers sold on the day.

With the clocks changed and weather now taking a distinct wintery turn producers with cattle still to reach market are urged to contact our auctioneers who will be pleased to advise on how to maximise your return.
