Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts held its weekly catalogued sale of 613 store cattle & suckled calves.
This week’s sale incorporated the annual show & sale of Charolais x and Continental x store cattle, excluding Limousins.
This year’s show was ably judged by Mr J Crichton, Loughrigg and sponsored by Stoneacre Motor Group & Zoetis.
Mr Crichton gave the overall championship to the British Blue class winner from W D & B Thompson, East Unthank. This classy black steer went on to realise £1650 and was purchased by the judge.
The reserve champion rosette went to the British Blue heifer from J D Yeats, Woodhouse selling to £1550.
Taking the Charolais Championship and trophy was a thumping silver Charolais steer from Mr I A Thornton, Hay-A-Park selling to £1960.

Another outstanding trade was seen throughout with many vendors stating how much dearer cattle are on the year, with extremely competitive returns seen here at Hexham.
Leading the sale today was a thumping silver Charolais x steer from the North of the county, Mr T H Vickers, Low Hedgeley selling to £2080.
Selling early in the day didn’t affect Messrs G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside who sold Angus x steers to £2040.
Charolais x heifers sold to a high of £1880 from Messrs R H Thompson & Son, Fitches Grange, with his run of 11 heifers going on to average £1614.11.
A marvelous run of twenty 14–16 month-old Charolais x steers from Messrs J H Baty & Son, Broomhill sold exceptionally well, cashing to £1800 and averaging £1624.50, making for a very satisfying days trading for the Heathersgill based family.
Yearling and weaned calves were sought after once again in this centre with Messrs W D & B Thompson, East Unthank cashing a 10-month-old well bred, hard muscles, red Limousin cross steer to £1700.
One of the highlights of the day was a magnificent run of fourty yearling Charolais x steers from Mr F T Walton, Flotterton, A pen of four silver steers went on to cash at £1610 with other penfuls selling away to £1550 and £1490, leaving a healthy average of £1407.95 for the Coquet Valley producer.

Messrs J D Yeats, Woodhouse brought their annual consignment of year-old British Blue and Limousin x calves which sold like hotcakes, with young Blue x heifers selling to £1600, twice.

Cast Ewes
Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1704 cast ewes & rams to another nice trade for the time of year.
Topping the sale at £240 was a pen of 4 Texels from Hedgeley Farms, Powburn.
At £227 was Texels from Mrs E Lishman, Fell Lane and at £220 was a Beltex x from Mr R H Walton, Linacres.
Suffolk x ewes sold to £150 from Messrs P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope.
Biggest mules slightly dearer but the middle Mules very similar. Topping at £114 was Messrs Graham, Miller Hill.
A pen of 31 Blackface ewes sold for £98 from Lord Max Percy Farming, Blueburn.

Store Lambs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 5422 store lambs to another good trade. Overall averages slightly down but the show on display less quality on the week.
Topping the sale was 5 Beltex x ewe lambs at £168 from Messrs J T & I Steele, Steeley Farm.
Suffolks topped at £158 and £155 from Mr C R Fawcett, Well House.
Commercial lambs still regularly £90-£108 for lambs with size and flesh.
A massive entry of mules sold very well once again topping at £101 for a trio from Mr K Philipson, Broadgates. Mules regularly £80-£92.
