Mule Gimmer Lambs

St Johns Chapel Mart offered a quality catalogue of 1785 Mule Gimmer Lambs consigned by members of the Weardale and Alston NEMSA Branch.

This year’s show was ably judged by Mule enthusiast, Mr Will Riddington, Hexham. Forward were 8 fantastic show pens of 10.

Judging this year’s run of 50 or more lambs was put to the very knowledgeable Joe & Harry Vickers, Alnwick, who made the keen return to St Johns Chapel.

The award for the best pens of 10 are as follows:

1^st– C Hodgeson, Hill House

2^nd-W M Reed & Sons, Lands Farm

3^rd-ML & BE Coulthard, Bridge End

4^th-JM & K Robinson, Ling Riggs

The award for the best run of 50 or more as follows:

2^nd-JM & K Robinson, Ling Riggs

3^rd-ML & BE Coulthard, Bridge End

The sale kicked off with a bang as the first sheep in the ring were the Reserve Champions from W M Reed & Sons, Lands Farm, these fantastic lambs went on to reach £255.

Shortly after JM & K Robsinson, Ling Riggs followed with a super run of 264 lambs, selling their first 5 pens to £208, £200, £198, £170 & £168 rounding off a good day’s trading for the Robinson team.

J Bowes, Glenwhelt House came into the ring not long after, he received the cup this year for the best run of 50 or more which proved true selling his first pen to £215 and averaging a stunning £201 for a classy run of Mule Gimmer lambs.

Next up was Messrs Pattinson, Pinfold, selling their much admired top pen to the joint top price of the day £300, then selling another flashy pen to £192.

Shortly after was the powerful run from ML & BE Coulthard, Bridge End who peaked at £250 for their third prize show lambs, with other terrific sorts selling to £210.

This years worthy champions were next in the ring, C Hodgson, Hill House, receiving the cup 2 years in a row. His super pen of 10 lambs oozed quality and later sold to £300, another great achievement for Chris this year.

Credit must go to all producers this year who brought forward such a great show of sheep in a highly testing summer in the area, the sheep were a testament to their dedication, and a great trade was seen with new and returning customers in abundance.

This resulted in a highly pleasing average of £153.64 with many vendors reporting being £5-£10 up on the year.
