Draft Ewes

St Johns Chapel held its annual sale of Swaledale Ewes, Shearlings & Gimmer Lambs presenting an increased entry of 1080 Swale Sheep selling to a flying trade with many vendors reporting being up £20-£50 up on the year, in a bustling ring it was a pleasure to see both St Johns Auction Mart and Swale sheep being so popular to many famers once again.

This year the show was ably judged by Swale stalwart Thomas Athey, High Lovelady Shield, Alston who came upon the following results as follows:

Ewes

1^st Prize-Allergill, Allergill Farm

2^nd Prize-I Collinson, Billing Shield

3^rd Prize-J R & C M Dalton, South Wellhope

Shearlings

1^st -S & K Emmott, Whitelees Farm

2^nd-C C & R G Martin, Shittlehopeside

3^rd-Messrs Green, Hill Farm

Champion-Allergill, Allergill Farm

Reserve Champion-I Collinson, Billing Shield

With a packed ringside and many purchasers leaving empty handed a great day trade was witnessed from start to finish.

The Champion pen of 10 from D Humble, Allergill were a credit to the breed selling to £220, with his next pen at £185, proving another successful trip to St Johns for the Humble team.

I Collinson, Billing Shield sold his run of 142 Ewes to a much improved trade on the year, reaching £200 for the Reserve Champion with other pens to £172 and £170. Strong ewes from Weardale Estates reached £175 up £43 on the year for a good run of Swale Ewes.

J R & C M Dalton, South Wellhope brought forward a powerful run of Swale Ewes peaking at £202 with a pen of 26 next at £170.

Shearlings were in big demand with Messrs Green, Hill Farm peaking at £195 and averaging a sublime £187.86 for 61 sending the Alston men home in delight.

C C & R G Martin, Shittlehopeside sold his second prize pen of shearlings to £195.

One highlight of the day was the dispersal from S & K Emmott, Whitelees who sold the 1^st Prize Shearlings to £220 with others to £205, Whitelees Ewes proved popular selling to £190, £188, £178 & £175 averaging £167.91 for 230 Swales sold, a very fitting end for the Emmotts.

Again thanks and praise must go to all Vendors for bringing forward such good sheep in such a testing summer.
