Hexham and Northern Marts held their Annual “Tow Law” Mule Gimmer Lamb Sale on behalf of the Weardale branch of NEMSA with another increased catalogued entry of 6110 this year.
The years show was very ably judged by Midlands Mule enthusiast, Mr S Deeming, Home Farm, Warwickshire. Mr Deeming had a tremendous show brought before him with twelve pens forward.
Judging this year’s runs of 100 or more this year was put into the very capable hands of Mr C Dent, Greenriggs, Kirby Stephen.
The Awards for the best pens of 10 are as follows;

Best run of 100 – W J Scott LTD, Low Leam
As per usual the pens of 10 were judged first through the ring and a terrific entry of 12 pens were presented before the judge, after close inspection and much diliberation Mr Deeming awarded the GW Robinson, Rosebowl and Champion NEMSA rosette to John, Steven and Andrew Reed, Lands Farm. This was once again a fantastic achievement for the Reed Family as this was an unbelievable eighth straight victory. This pen was a fantastic example of the breed and went on to realise £400.00 to regular purchaser, Mr P Elliot, Bank House, Penrith.
After the single pens were judged, the best runs of 100 were inspected by Mr C Dent, Greenriggs, Kirby Stephen. Taking this year’s William Reed Perpetual Trophy for the best run of 100 lambs went to W J Scott Ltd, Low Leam.
The Scott’s terrific run of 468 lambs went on to top at £260.00 and took away an eye watering average of £186.13 leaving the Rede valley producers extremely happy with their days trading.
Highest trading pen on the day came from one of the annual highlights for the sale and came from the Mr I Potts of Redburn. These were the second prized pen in the pre-sale show and had the usual style and presence we come to expect from a pen from Mr Potts. These went on to sell for £410.00 to the judge.
Credit must go to all producers this year who brought forward such a strong show of sheep considering the very dry and testing summer with many sheep being short of keep. The sheep were a testament to the producer’s hard work and dedication. This was greatly rewarded, and a tremendous trade was seen throughout the sale with new and existing customers coming to the sale to create a fantastic atmosphere.
Tupping lambs were very easily cashed and regularly surpassed £200.00. The greatest demand was seen for strong running lambs. These were very easily sold and traded between £150-165 with ease.
There had been fear of the smaller running lambs being harder to cash but this certainly wasn’t the case. These sold easily with repeat customers bidding eagerly for runs of lambs between £128-135.
This left a fantastic average of £158.50 right through (+£10) for 346 more sold compared to the previous year.
