Hexham & Northern Marts held their final sale of store cattle in the month of September and offered for sale 409 catalogued head of predominantly suckler beef bred types from eleven to twenty-nine months of age.
Trade continued at the levels seen in recent weeks and with a number of seasonal purchasers appearing at the ringside, levels for some classes of cattle were considerably dearer on the week.
The sale peaked at £2780 for a monstrous Charolais cross steer at 27 months of age from regular North Yorkshire based consignor, Ian A Thornton, Gibbet House, Knaresborough. The bullock was one of a pen of five that levelled at £2536 and stood alongside a pen of five outstanding Belted Galloway crosses at 26/28 months that sold as one lot and attained a worthy £1920 each. The same vendor consigned a super run of 17 steers from his Hay-a-Park holding and these went on to top at £2600 for the lead Angus bullock on the day which contributed to the pen average of £2338 to complete a satisfying trip North to Tyne Green for Mr Thornton once again.
The Angus was, as always well-represented through the ring and Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms, Earsdon enjoyed another fast trade with the black breed topping at £2500 for a big bullock by a Rawburn sire and levelling at £2245 for four sold.
Another run of hefty bullocks at 17-18 months were presented by Ian & Anne Hamilton, Claywalls and these also sold well topping at £2640 and split evenly between well-sourced Charolais and Limousin crosses the pen full of sixteen traded squarely to return at £2273 throughout for the Capheaton couple.
Heifer trade was also buoyant and the pick of the day was a superb pen from Peter Robson, Taylorburn, Ninebanks that immediately caught the eye of all ringside and saw the best scale to £2640. With a pen of three selling to £2400 the fourteen shapely sorts which would make exceptional butchers heifers or likewise superb bullers averaged a mighty £2247 throughout for a delighted Mr Robson.
Another notable highlight was the smart load of Limousin cross steers from David Johnson, Blackhalls, Kirkwhelpington which after a trying summer at grass met with great demand. By Mr Johnsons own admission ‘the best bullock he had ever brought to Hexham’ was highly sought after and sold for £2540 and the cracking pen of twelve averaged £2201 as just rewards for a difficult grazing season.
With young bulls rarely seen through the Hexham ring there was no shortage of demand for a smart pure-bred Limousin lad from noted breeders John & John Jnr; Messrs Carruthers, Silloans, Rochester who sold this one well at £2480.
With a vast array of yearling cattle set to be traded over the coming weeks during the traditional October show sales here at Hexham it was encouraging to witness the first big run of such sorts meet with great demand. Messrs Walton, Flotterton, Rothbury came forward with their annual offering of sixty well-bred, well-drawn Angus cross yearling steers from The Coquet Valley and these sold on a flying trade. Presented almost entirely in level pens of sixes the best pen rose to a massive £2120 and with all lots selling to long-standing return purchasers the entire run was traded at an astounding average of £1959 per head, representing a rise well in excess of five hundred pounds per head on the year.
The following weeks see special prize shows for Charolais and Continental cross cattle on 3rd Oct; Limousin cattle on 10th Oct; Angus and Native breed cattle on 17th Oct and The Traditional ‘Bellingham’ and ‘Tow Law’ show sales for Suckler calves on 23rd and 24th of the month. Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 9336 Store Lambs, one of the largest entries seen at Hexham for many years.
The sale included the annual Horned & Mule Show & Sale which was ably judged by Mr Andrew Hutcheson, Raven Hill.
The overall championship went to E & L Fawcett, Charity Hall with 20 Mule lambs selling for £124.
Reserve championship went to J A I & D J Scott, The Brigg with 24 superb Blackface lambs selling to £125.
The overall sale topper was a Beltex x lamb at £160 from R G & L A Grieve & Son, Whiteside, who also sold 5 at £156.
Not far behind at £155 was a pair of Dutch Texel x lambs from B A & A M Storrow & Sons, Willimoteswick.
Suffolk x lambs sold to £144 for 10 from G H Walton & Son, Greyside.
Mule lambs topped at £128 for 4 from E & L Fawcett, Charity Hall.
