Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of 580 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves on Friday 19th September which included the special monthly sale for Native bred cattle.
Natives dominated the entry today and met a great trade throughout. Leading prices on the day belonged to the Angus breed with a string of steers setting the standard and sold to a high of £2800.00 for a thumper from Holywell Farms, Church Farm. Another Hexham regular, G & JH Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside Farm sold steers to £2700.00 and £2680.00. Another to sell for £2680.00 was a heavy sort from L R Carmichael & Son, Berwick Hill.
Leading the heifer trade was a well-fleshed Angus cross heifer from J C Cuthbert, Bankfoot Farm. The same home sold another for £2640.00. The best of the Limousin crosses sold to £2550.00 for a shapey red lady from Brampton based producer Mr E Dean, Kirkhouse.
One of the sale highlights was an outstanding run of 52 sixteen month old Angus cross steers from Richard and Lance Green, Heckley High House. This was their second offering of their sought after Angus bred cattle and sold to £2490.00 and went on to average a very impressive £2223.27. A very good days trading for the Alnwick based father and son team.
Younger cattle off the grass met a very competitive trade and sold well with quality selling to a premium. J & D Longlands Ltd, Tone Hall sold three Charolais cross steers aged 12 months to £2180.00.
Eleven month old Charolais cross heifers from R E Shield, Oxclose sold to £1880.00 whilst year old Angus cross heifers from A Wilkinson & Sons, New Rift Farm sold to £1790.00.

Store Lambs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 7246 Store Lambs to a storming trade to average all in £119.58 for 1615 more lambs sold on the year.
This weeks sale included the annual Show & Sale of Cheviot Lams ably judged by Mr Gillhespy, Quarry Gill who awarded his champion pen to W D Allen, Stoophill for a pen of 51 selling for £127.
Topping the sale at £195 was 14 phenominal Beltex cross lambs from J & A Moralee, Hard Riding who also sold 10 at £194, another 10 at £190, 12 more at £189 and another 10 at £182. Rounding off a very worthwhile trip to Hexham.
J P & F Scott, Westburnhope sold Beltex cross lambs to £180 and J L & Sons, Agars Hill sold 4 at £166 and 13 more at £165. 590 Beltex cross lambs went on to average £153.67.
Another highlight was the annual consignment from Messrs S Shell & Son, Brandon, peaking at £170 for 50 and another 50 at £167 for some super Half Bred cross lambs.
Mules were a strong trade today, topping at £121 for 18 from W L Patterson & Son, Broomhope, the Mules today right through averaged £105.56.
Texel cross lambs sold to £144 from D J & W Sedgewick, Errington Red House with others from Messrs Curry, Low Burradon and E Watson, East Thorn at £142 with 3956 Texel cross lambs averaging £117.84.
Many more can be easily handled at Hexham on a weekly basis.
