Store Lambs
St Johns Chapel Mart sold a catalogued entry of 1385 Store Lambs. In addition to this was 40 breeding sheep/rams, as well as the well supported Annual Prize Show & Sale of Young Handlers Store Lambs.
The Annual Prize Show & Sale of Young Handlers was kindly judged by Peter Monkhouse, who had a super 12 entrants ranging from the Lake District, Weardale, Alston and Teasdale. The results were as follows:
1st – Gracie Harrison, Aimshaugh – a Texel x lamb reaching £163
2nd – Sophie Peadon, Ludwell – a Blue Texel lamb reaching £130
3rd – Scarlett Fletcher, Shortthorns – a Texel lamb reaching £142
Huge praise must go to all the young handlers who did a fantastic job showing and selling their lambs – the future is in safe hands!
The sale topped at £163 for the 1st prize young handlers lamb from Gracie Harrison, Aimshaugh. The Aimshaugh team sold 52 lambs to average a respectable £111.94 for smart Cheviot and Texel x lambs.
Next up was a nice selection of breeding sheep from L M Hutchinson, Pease Myers – these smart Mule Gimmer lambs made £142 for the stronger sorts and £132 for the next pen.
A Peart & Son, Woodcroft brought a great run of 90 lambs to average a whopping £128.16, topping at £133 for 12 powerful Texel x lambs.
Mule lambs sold to a flyer – topping was 22 at £124 from previously mentioned L M Hutchinson, Pease Myers. W Wearmouth, Rosehill sold 23 strong mules to £117. Messrs Wearmouth also sold quality continental lambs to £128 with others to £125 and £123 – a successful return to St Johns for the Rosehill team.
P W Iredale made the trip all the way from the Lake District to take advantage of the Chapel store trade, selling well bred Texel x Cheviots to £128 for 5 and £119 for 26 averaging over £115 for 52 sweet lambs.
Swales were another buoyant trade with 20 from J M & K Robinson, Ling Riggs reaching £68 and 30 from T S MacDonald, Hammershield making £67.
