Store Cattle
Store Cattle Sales returned this week after a week off for Kelso Ram Sales. A useful entry of 405 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves were on offer, with this week being the monthly special sale for Native bred cattle.
Store Cattle trade is starting to build a little momentum with numbers being short everywhere and a lift in beef price, this was very noticeable with the increased number of purchasers ringside. This created a sharp trade for all classes and many vendors commenting a similar trade to this time last year, possibly even dearer!
Leading the sale with a strong Blonde x steer was P & PM Walker, Houselop Grange which achieved £2590.00. Not too far behind was the leading native bred beast, an Angus cross steer from G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside which sold to £2550.00.
Highest priced heifers this week were a pair of Hereford crosses from A Parker, High Wooley which created some attention and sold to £2450.00. G & EA Herdman, Luns House brought their usual stamp of quality forward, Limousin bred cattle and this week sold heifers to £2390.00.
The Shell family of Brandon, Powburn sold a marvellous run of Sim Luing and Luing cattle that saw powerful heifers sell to £2380.00 on two separate occasions.
An increasing number of dairy bred beasts are now find their way to the Hexham ring and are extremely easily cashed. Noteable runs included the handy packet of eleven British blue crosses aging 14-16m from J & E Campbell, Rosebrough which saw heifers achieve £2000.00.
A small number of weaned, yearling types forward but these like the older beasts met a great trade and saw increasing demand. A tremendous run of Angus cross heifers from JHC Campbell & Sons, Thrunton sold to £2240.00 for a pair and £2120.00 for another pair. Another Hexham regular is John Charlton of Harnham Hall Farming Ltd who sold 11 month old Charolais cross steers to £2060.00.
More cattle could have easily been marketed with the amount of potential ringside purchasers present and more needed now on a weekly basis.
