Hexham and Northern Marts held its second sale of Mule Ewe Lambs with another increased entry of 2132 Lambs.
This year’s pre-sale show was very ably judged by renowned Coquetdale stockman, Mac Young, Sharpeton Edge. After a thorough examination of each pen that was brought before him, Mr Young gave the Overall NEMSA Championship rosette and Arthur Iveson Shield to a very correct and bonny pen from J Browell & Sons, Quarry House. This pen were a great example of the breed and went on to realise a joint top price of £230.00.
The fantastic show of lambs met a great trade throughout and was certainly one not to be missed. The sale started off in cracking fashion with the Second prized pen and Overall Reserve Champions forward from M & C Ridley, Shitlington Hall setting the standard for the day which went on to sell for £225.00.
Two other pens shared the top price of £230.00 along with the Champions. The Browell family’s second pen also made £230.00 and their run of sheep, predominantly sired by homebred tups, went on to average a fantastic £218.00. The other pen to achieve £230.00 was a very flashy pen from J Hunter & Son, The Steel.
A special mention must go to A & T Dixon, Chirdon who brought an outstanding run of 215 lambs which included the tops and the youngest running lambs which topped at £215.00 and averaged £173.37.
It was very encouraging to see fresh faces to Hexham selling their Mule Ewe Lambs for the first time along with the regular consignments. More Mule Ewe Lambs could have easily been sold with a very strong trade being seen for both tupping and running type lambs. Plenty of stronger types of lambs surpassed the £200.00 barrier. The running lambs saw a major lift on the year and were very easily sold with a good number selling in excess of £170.00.
A fantastic sale average was seen and would see an increase of £23 on the year.

Cheviot Mule Ewe Lambs
Another increased entry of Cheviot Mules once again with the breed proving more popular and these once again met a fantastic trade. The pre-sale show was judged by Mr Mac Young, Sharpeton Edge who awarded the first prize rosette to Miss Georgie Gater-Moore, on behalf of Mr FT Walton, Flotterton. A powerful pen of sheep which went on to sell for days top price of £235.00.
