Hexham and Northern Marts held their Prize Show and Sale for Native Bred Cattle this week which saw a fabulous entry of 915 cattle which is an increase of 115 on the year.
The prize show element was once again generously supported by longstanding sponsors The Rawburn Pedigree Aberdeen Angus Herd, The Luing Cattle Society and the overall championship by RM Corbett Ltd.
Overseeing the judging operations this week was renowned Cumbrian stockman, Mr Thomas Moscrop, Rye Close, Brampton.
After much deliberation, Mr Moscrop chose the Angus Champion as his Overall Champion and winner of The Martin Wallace Memorial Cup. This was consigned by Michael and Susan Jordon, Tughall Grange with a very stylish and well put together steer. The Chathill based producers also went on to take the Reserve Overall with a sizable Hereford cross-steer.

Trade for all classes of cattle today was simply magnificent. From the biggest to the smallest, all were very easily cashed and saw great demand throughout leaving all very happy with their days trading. Store steers went on to level at £2090.91 with heifers £1845.51
With it being “Native” week, the sale started with a small but very useful entry of forward continental bred cattle which meet a slightly dearer trade. Three cattle shared top spot this week of £2700.00. Firstly a thumping black Limousin cross steer from I & A Hamilton, Claywalls this was then followed by two beasts forward from Michael & Susan Jordon, Tughall Grange with a thick Angus cross and then the Overall Champion, another Angus cross.
L R Carmichael & Son, Berwick Hill consigned ten forward Angus and Limousin cross steers which peaked at £2660.00 and averaged £2316.00.
One of the sale highlights was the magnificent run of 100 fantastic Hereford and Angus cross steers and heifers aging 16-18 months. All homebred bred from their three way cross cows (Hereford x Simmental x Angus), these were a sight to behold and caught the eye of many prospective buyers. Angus cross steers sold to £2700.00 for the champion whilst the first prize winning pen of four sold to £2520.00. The Hereford cross steers topped at £2600.00 for the Reserve Champion whilst they had pens of four reach £2490.00 & £2480.00.
Heifers were very good to sell also with a thick Angus heifers selling to £2480.00 with another selling to £2440.00. A pen of 3 Hereford crosses went on to sell for £2320.00 with others selling to £2180.00. The whole run went on to average a very impressive £2234.39, leaving The Jordon’S very pleased with their days trading here at Hexham.
Messrs Armstrong & Hunter, Carrick brought a fabulous run of 25 Luing steers which were brought in straight off the hill and sold like hot cakes selling to a high of £2420.00 for their first prize winning pen of 4.
Another making their way south from Chathill was Hillcrest Livestock, Newham who sold South Devon steers to £2300.00.
Messrs Dodd & Wise, Sillywrea went on to be sold very late on and saw no ill effect of being one of the last to go through the ring and sold Beef Shorthorn steers to £2200.00 & £2140.00.
G T Anderson, Fairnley sold a great packet of Belted Galloway bullocks aging 26-28 months which cashed away nicely to £1920.00. Year old Galloway cross steers from top of the Coquet valley consigned by Anderson Partners, Linshiels sold to £1380.00.
A handful of stirks forward this week and these sold to £1600.00 for eight-month-old Angus cross steer from Featherwood Partners, Featherwood.

Store Lambs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 7167 Store Lambs to a fantastic trade with all classes much sharper on the week, with an overall sale average of £114.48. This includes just over 1200 Mule, Blackface, Swaledale & Cheviot lambs.
Topping the days trading was £168 from P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope for Beltex x lambs, closely followed at £166 for a pen from J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill.
Mules again met a well supported trade with an incredible ring-filling 146 lambs reaching £119 from T A Collingwood & Sons, Ambling Gate.
A lesser show of Blackface lambs forward sold to £91 for a pen of 30 from JAI & DJ Scott, The Brigg.
Entries are highly encouraged with an ever-growing and very impressive ringside of buyers all keen for sheep.
