Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of Store Cattle & Suckled Calves offered for sale a sound entry of 396 catalogued head which included over One Hundred and Thirty Angus, Hereford, South Devon and other Native Breed cattle for the Monthly Special Sale of such sorts.
After a scorching trade last week for a superb entry of largely exceptional continental cross bred cattle this week’s sale saw largely a different class of cattle sell to a smaller ringside and yet, in the main trade was maintained for most categories.
The sale was topped by a big and shapely Charolais cross bullock at 20 months which sold for £2640 from Messrs Ogle Blackburn and was closely followed by a Limmy at £2620 from Geoff Hubbuck, Rising Sun. The female portion of the sale scaled to £2580 for a super Limousin cross heifer and one of a great run from Messrs Nixon, Stotsfold and this one was followed by another Limmy at £2500 from Alan Ogle, Comb Hill.
The native section was buoyant as ever and was topped at £2480 by a big Angus bullock from The Renners of Yetlington, fresh from their return to the Hexham ring last week and the same family trumped the Hereford trade selling a bullock at £2320. Black heifers from Messrs Burn, Aydonshields sold to £2380 whilst a fabulous run of South Devon bullocks from noted purveyors Richard and Shaun Barron, The Deans topped at £2320 and averaged £2233 for twelve of the same sold on the day.
Luing bullocks topped at £1900 from Messrs Bell, Woodhall and the native line-up was completed by a super Belted Galloway bullock at £1840 from Messrs Layfield, Milkup Bank.
Within the yearling entry the standout run on this day was that of Messrs Walton, Greyside who sold a typically stylish batch of calves that topped at £2340 for both Limousin and Charolais cross steers whilst their heifer offering scaled to £2200 on three occasions and contributed to an average of £2207 for twenty sold.
The youngest calves at 8-9 months of age were in short supply and as such sold well topping at £2000 for a smart Limmy heifer from Barry Rayson, Salmonswell which trumped the steer calves that sold to £1980 twice, both being Limousin crosses, the first from Messrs Gilhespy, Tedcastle with another from Messrs Reed, Dyke Nook at the same tariff.

Topping the sale at £300 for Texels was two separate vendors; D Collingwood, Intake and T L Forster & Son Lowes Fell.
Texels also sold to £295 from W & J A Longlands, Rusheylaw, and others at £290 from J Hunter & Sons, The Steel and D Fletcher & D Coates, Shortthorns.
Beltex x ewes sold to £252 from I Burn & Sons, Grange House.
Suffolk x ewes sold to £228 from J O Clark, Brinkburn Newhouses.
Lowes Fell sold 2 Bluefaced Leicester ewes to £208 and Cheviot Mule ewes sold to £194 from W D Howard, Springwood.
Mule ewes sold to £192 twice, firstly from J Hunter & Sons, the Steel then from M L & B E Coulthard, Bridge End Farm who was one of up teen Weardale vendors at Hexham today.
Blackface ewes sold to £156 for 4 from the Steel.
Swale ewes sold to £122 twice, firstly a pen of 8 from Messrs Pattinson, Pinfold House then a pen from Wolsingham Park Farms.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 3310 Store Hoggs to another electric trade, averaging £118.43 at in which includes over 1000 Mule, Horned & Hill Hoggs.
Topping today was J R Robinson, Warksfield Head who sold powerful Texel Cross Hoggs to £157.
P Guiry & Sons, Glanton Town Farm sold a fantastic run of 156 Texel Cross Hoggs to average a stunning £145.55 to a top of £155 for 30 crackers.
B D Milburn, Butterknowes brought another super trailer load of 56 Texel Cross Hoggs to average £140.68 topping at £151 for a powerful trio.
C Hodgson, Hill House West sold a quartet of Mule Hoggs to £145.
Other strong Mules to £132 were from Mr I Potts, Redburn, with his usual stamp of quality Mules.
Blackface Hoggs sold to £110 for 29 from the Little Harle Partnership.
Cheviots sold very well, topping at £142 for 17 from the Isle Of Man.
Suffolk Cross Hoggs sold to £149 from previously mentioned P Guiry & Son, with all Suffolk Cross Hoggs today averaging £129.99.
