Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly Store Cattle and Suckled Calves Sale which this week included the special annual show and sale of Limousin bred cattle. This week’s sale was very kindly sponsored by Farmers Guardian and part of their Marts the Heart Sales and was also sponsored by local machinery dealership, Thomas Sherrif & Co Ltd. Thanks again to these two businesses for their continued support.
This year saw an outstanding show of cattle and a real credit to all that produced cattle for the show. A great advert for the breed and enhanced the centres reputation for attracting some of the best suckled bred cattle in the country.
This year’s show was very ably judged by Lincolnshire Farmer and Wholesaler Mr Richard Brown, Lincolnshire. After the classes of steers and heifers the overall championship went to a terrific red, thirteen-month-old heifer from J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill.

Reserve went to the very sweet heifer from A & D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall. These two heifers both went on to share the top priced spoils and sold to £3600.00.

The Best Pen of 4 Limousin Cross Calves – W M Reed & Sons, Lands Farm

This sale has a fantastic reputation for attracting a great show of cattle and this was once again proven today, with a great spectacle of both cattle and purchasers. The largest show of ringside buyers seen for some years attended the days sale and created a fantastic trade from start to finish. More cattle sold this year at this sale remarkably, aided by new vendors gracing Ring 1, predominantly from North of the border.
Stronger, forward feeding cattle were once again a good trade and possible again sharper. Leading the forward stores were Limousin cross steers from I & A Hamilton, Claywalls. In the usual fine fettle, these sold to £2760.00 and £2750.00. AJ & H Gordon & Son, Old Deanham returned with another great array of older, feeding cattle that have the reputation for going on. These sold to £2680.00 for a Limousin cross steer.
The small offering of Angus’ at the beginning of the sale met great returns also and saw a high of £2600.00 for steers from Holywell Farms, Church Farm.
It was the spectacular entry of weaned and yearling cattle that created the most demand and saw purchasers descend from across the United Kingdom. One of the sale highlights was the annual run of year-old calves from J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill. Just a rare run of thirty-four top Limousin bred steers and heifers, aging 11-13 months. The heifers from this home were in great demand and sold to £3600.00 twice and others selling to £2700.00. Steers saw a mega trade also and sold to a high of £2320.00. The consignment went on to average £2310.88, leaving the Whitfield family very pleased with their days trading.
Coming down from Alston with three great 10-month-old heifers was I M & TR Hodgson, Bayle Hill which cashed away to £2500.00 for a lovely red, stylish sort.
Making the annual trip down from Peebleshire was H Cockburn & Partners, Kingside with a lovely run of Limousin cross steers and heifers with the main of them out of Simmental cross type cows. These peaked at £2440.00 for an 11-month steer and £2650.00 for 17-month-old heifers.
Another annual consignment came T Common & Son, Low Ardley which have a great following and saw year old steers peak at £2460.00 and heifers to £2420.00.
Many more could have been mentioned after a great day’s trading and the power of the Hexham store cattle ring for all classes of beasts.
Please do not hesitate to call or speak to auctioneers regards to marketing cattle.
