Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its first sale of Store Cattle and Suckled Calves of June with an entry of 174 cattle from across the North of England and Scottish Borders.
Trade overall was very strong considering the current prime values and very much in line with last weeks values. Forward store cattle met a great trade and met great demand and saw a high of £2480.00 for a heavy Limousin cross steer from Hexham regulars, G & EA Herdman, Luns House.
J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters sold their usual stamp of quality Limousin crossbred cattle and saw a high of £2400.00 for steers and £2360.00 for heifers on two separate occasions.
Once again, all classes of native bred cattle were easily cashed in this centre and K Hall, West Butsfield were once again the benefactors of this and saw 14-month Angus cross heifers peak at £2360.00. Not too far behind was the second beast in the ring on the day from J & A Thompson, The Ash who’s run of Angus cross stabiliser heifers sold to £2300.00.
Another heifer peaking at £2300.00 was a fabulous 12-month-old Blonde cross from R English & Son, Browns Leazes. The same home cashed 11-month-old steers to £2240.00.
A great run of well-bred Limousin cross cattle from GH Walton & Sons, Greyside have a great reputation and attracted great interest with this run of 11–12-month-old steers, heifers and Young Bulls sold to £2220.00 for steers, £1980.00 for 12-month heifers and a lovely young bull selling to £2080.00.
Next week will see our monthly sale of Breeding cattle and has a useful entry of commercial heifers and calves. We are actively seeking entries for both store cattle and breeding cattle to fulfil demand.

Hexham & Northern Mart sold 446 Cast Ewes & Tups to another strong trade for a big proportion of leaner Horned ewes forward.
Topping the ewes at £310 was a pair of Texel ewes from J H Emerson, Haggate.
First ewes in the ring came to £288 for another pair from D Dawson, Middle Houselop.
Dutch Texel ewes sold to £250 from D & K M Dickinson, Chattlehope House.
Beltex x ewes sold to £228 from P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope.
Bluefaced Leicesters sold to £222 from S J & B A Murray, Stable Yard.
Also at £222 was Suffolk x ewes twice – firstly a trio from Dodd & Wise, Sillywrea then a pair from Middle Horsleyhope.
Mule ewes sold to £180 twice from B J Haigh, Hightown who also sold Dorset ewes to £190 for a pair.
Blackface ewes sold to £160 from Nilston Rigg Farm.
Swaledale ewes sold to £150 from T S MacDonald, Hammershield.

A smaller show of Ewes, Shearlings & Hoggs with Lambs reflecting the time of year sold to a scorching trade for a plainer show of sheep.
Ewes and lambs peaked at £168 per life for a strong Suffolk x ewe and lamb from Hartside Farm.
Texel x hoggs and lambs were keenly bid for, reaching £178 on two occasions from D Carr & Son, Highwood.
