Mule Ewe Lambs
Hexham and Northern Marts held its Grand Opening Sale of Mule Ewe lambs with a terrific show of sheep throughout once again this year. An entry that consisted of stronger, tupping lamb types. The outstanding show of sheep is a true testament to the dedication and stockmanship shown by the producers and they should all be commended for their efforts. This was matched by an electric atmosphere with a packed ringside of prospective purchasers and onlookers.
This year’s pre-sale show for The Robson & Cowan Trophy for pens of 25 Lambs was judged by North Walian stockman, Mr Gareth Jones, Foxhall, Denbigh and once again kindly sponsored by Robson & Cowan Country Store.
Mr Jones has an unenviable task of inspecting seven, powerful and extremely well-presented pens. After much deliberation, the NEMSA Championship rosette and Robson & Cowan Trophy was awarded to long standing supporters J Hunter & Sons, The Steel for a well-presented for a well-presented pen and as Andy said; “one of the best pens they’ve produced”. This magnificent pen went on to achieve £340.00 and went to returning customer JH & SM Mason, Keasden Head for their renowned flock in Lancashire.
Full Prize List:
1st – J Hunter & Sons, The Steel
2nd – M W & C M Ridley, Shitlington Hall
3rd – J Browell & Sons. Quarry House
Run of 100 – M W & C M Ridley, Shitlington Hall
The Stuart Ridley Memorial Trophy which was awarded for the best run of 100 or more Ewe Lambs consigned by a member of ‘NEMSA’ was awarded to serial recipients of the award; W & CM Ridley, Shitlington Hall. This mighty fine run of 177 top draw ewe lambs which went on to average a mind blowing £258.70, which even left Kevin speechless.

The Ridley’s weren’t finished there; they went on to break last year’s record price of £350.00 selling their second prized winning pen to a new sale centre record of £360.00 for ex. Blackface bred Mules.

The third prized pen this year came from the Browell Family at Quarry House. One of the many vendors that brought an increased number of lambs to the sale this year and saw the benefit. Their leading pen went on to achieve £250.00 and sold to the judge.

The sale itself was once again a great success and proved its might with it being the number one destination to procure some of the best Blackface bred Tupping lambs in the country. A remarkable average of £218.11 (+£12) was achieved for a similar number forward.
A great gesture was made by all consignors this year who either donated a lamb to be sold or donated the price of a lamb sold within their run. All proceeds were for the Great North Air Ambulance Service and in memory of the late John Browell. Eleven lambs were brought forward at the conclusion of the Mules and put up for sale. These were keenly bid for and sold to £300.00 and bought by Mr T Oliver, East Farm. Well done to all involved for supporting such a great cause and in memory of a great man.
Entries now actively sought after for the Second Sale held on Thursday 17th September.
