Hexham and Northern Marts held its first Autumn Show and Sale of Store Cattle with this week being the annual show for Charolais and other Continental Bred Cattle (excluding Limousins). This year’s show was very ably judged by long standing weekly supporter, Mr Stephen Dale, Rooker Hill. The days sale was also once again kindly sponsored by Stoneacre Motor Group Newcastle and Zoetis.
This weeks sale saw a catalogued entry of 534 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. The pre-sale show Championship was won by a fantastic black British Blue cross heifer from John and Steven Yeats, Woodhouse which later went on to realise £2480.00 to B & T Kitson, Northallerton.
Mr Dale then chose the Charolais cross steer from Ian Bell and Rebecca Dickins, Hallbankgate Farms as his Overall Reserve Champion. A well shaped steer that went on to achieve £2600.00 selling to the judge.
Winning the best pen of four Charolais Steers this year once again was Ian & Ann Hamilton, Claywalls which went on to sell for £2400.00
A fantastic show of commercial cattle was seen today, especially a great offering of Charolais bred cattle with fantastic quality forward. Older forward stores once again very easily cashed today and met a great trade and would be just as dear as last week. This saw steers average £2184.02 and heifers met an absolute flyer leveling at £2050.76.
That said, it was an outstanding black Limousin cross steer from I & A Hamilton, Claywalls that stole the limelight, leading the sale at £2840.00.
A pair of beasts shared the price of £2620.00 this week. Firstly a thumping Charolais cross heifer from Hallbankgate Farms. This was then matched by an outstanding fourteen-month-old Charolais steer from Mr K Lumley, Newbiggin.
G Smith & Son, West Bolton enjoyed a fruitful trip down the A697 with 10 well-fleshed Limousin cross steers which saw a high of £2600.00 and went on to average £2428.00.
A small offering of Angus cross cattle this week, but these met a flying trade with older steers from G S Dodds & Son, Delight peaking at £2520.00.
One of the many Charolais bred cattle highlights was a fantastic run of twenty 16-month-old heifers from PC Charleton, Little Harle which sold to £2440.00 and went on to level at £2211.50, a monstrous lift of £731 on the previous year.
Hailing from the same parish was a terrific run of forty-five 14–16-month-old steers and heifers from JW Robson & Son, East Shaftoe which sold to £2440.00 for a pair of Charolais cross steers and £2380.00 for Charolais heifers leaving Mr Robson and stockman Dan Thompson a very healthy average of £2132.44, a lift of £560 on the year.
Cumbrian based Charolais breeders and producers Hallbankgate Farms had a terrific run of Charolais cross cattle. All by homebred bulls and out of hairy type cows. After living on top of a hill for the summer, the consignment went to top at £2620.00 for heifers and £2320.00 for steers and leveling at £2121.11.
After their show success previously, JD Yeats, Woodhouse enjoyed a buoyant trade for their British Blue bred cattle. These peaked at £2480.00 for a classy heifer. Year old steers from this home cashed £2280.00.
A small offering of weaned calves and year old calves this week and these met great demand with more customers looking for wintering cattle now.
Mr F T Walton, Flotterton returned with the annual consignment of forty-four 11–12-month-old Charolais cross steers which met an absolute flyer. These saw a high of £2160.00 for a pen of three with plenty of other pens selling at beyond £2000.00. The run went on to average a very healthy £1944.55.
TJ Lee & Son, Hackford sold ten-month-old Charolais cross-steers to £1980.00.

Topping the ewes at £270 was a trio and then a single of Texels from D Barron, New Acres.

Suffolk x ewes sold to £215 from G N Potts & Son, Black Callerton. F W Robson, South Farm sold a pen of 22 at £200.
A light show of Mules sold to a top of £180 for 15 from E & T N Ballantyne, Cowburn Rigg who also sold 11 Blackface ewes at £140.
Swaledale ewes sold to £110 from W J Scott Ltd, Low Leam.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 6897 Store Lambs to another strong trade to average all in £112.80 with purchasers from all stretches of the UK here at Hexham.
Topping today was a trio of Beltex x lambs from P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope at £168, who also sold 3 more at £159, 6 more at £157 and 2 at £151.
J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill brought a fine run of Beltex x lambs to Hexham, topping at £162 and averaging £138.12 for 69.
Dutch Texel x lambs sold to £147 for 6 from B A & A M Storrow & Sons, Willimoteswick with others to £144 twice.
Suffolks always sell well here at Hexham, topping at £152 for a pen from C R Fawcett, Well House with others to £150 from L Bell, Castle Park.
Texel x lambs sold well topping at £146 from Brieredge Farm, with 4896 Texel x lambs averaging £119.72.
Blackface lambs peaked at £85 for 70 from Featherwood Partners.
Mules sold to £120 from G T & M E Tweddle, Springwell.
