Hexham and Northern Marts held its first sale of July with a nice entry of 155 Store Cattle and Weaned Calves. All classes of cattle were covered from the best-bred continentals and natives alongside an ever-increasing offering of dairy bred beasts. All of these met a fantastic trade and would be even sharper compared to the extreme rates observed at the previous sale.
Leading the sale today with the very first beast in the ring was G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside with a great Angus cross steer which sold to £2460.00 and the following one made £2420.00. Dairy bred Angus cross steers from R Phillipson & Son, North Shotton sold to £2260.00.
A run older, feeding stores from Telfer Brothers, Make-Me-Rich, sold to £2390.00 and £2380.00 for Limousin cross steers.
Very few forward, older heifers presented today, heifers topped at £2250.00 for a Charolais from Telfer Brothers. Limousin cross heifers sold to £2200.00 from T G Temple & Son, Low Hall.
A wide selection of younger, weaned stirks forward this week. Some well-bred Limousin and British Blue cross forward attracted real interest, and these sold to an unrivalled trade. A large, year old Limousin cross steer from I Burn & Sons, Grange House sold to £2280.00.
Bringing their usual stamp of quality yearling suckler bred calves was J Hunter & Sons, The Steel whose Limousin cross steers topped at £2260.00 and heifers sold to £1920.00.
Not to be outdone was GH Walton & Sons, Greyside who brought another great consignment of Limousin and British Blue bred suckled calves which sold very easily and attracted great interest. These sold to £2120.00 for a pair of yearling Limousin cross steers whilst 10-month-old British blue and Limousin cross steers sold to £2080.00 on separate occasions.
A handful of very young bulls forward this week sold well for what was forward seeing a high of £1400.00 for a pure 8-month-old Angus from D J & J E Lumley, Nookton.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 934 Cast Ewes & Tups, which is 582 more on the year, to a very buoyant trade.
A new centre record was made at £378 from C Moralee & Sons, Blackburn for a tremendous Texel ewe, with another selling at £315.
Texel ewes also sold to £340 from C & C Farming, Flotterton.
D J & W Sedgewick, Errington Red House sold Texel ewes to £300 and £292.
Dutch Texel ewes sold to £280 from J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill.
Suffolk x ewes sold to £226 for 8 from Mossburnford Farm Partnership.
Bluefaced Leicester ewes sold to £204 from Middle Dukesfield. Not far behind was a trio at £203 from W M Reed & Son, Lands Farm.
Cheviot Mule ewes sold to £193 for 10 from Errington Red House who also sold Mules to £188.
Horned ewes sold at grate pace with leaner sorts very dear.
Blackface ewes sold to £162 for 9 from J Hunter & Sons, The Steel.
Swaledale ewes sold to £142 for 5 from J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill.
Goats sold to £165 from J Campbell, Oakley Manor. Goats wanted weekly.
