Sale of Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its annual “May Term” sale of 835 catalogued store cattle and suckled calves. Another fantastic show of cattle this week were brought forward by our loyal customers, that met a fantastic trade right through, with all classes competitively bid for from the first beast to the last beast. This was helped with another fantastic turnout of purchasers from across the British Isles.

Trade for the forward cattle was slightly sharper on the week, but a better show of forward cattle this week. Younger cattle again sold extremely easily through the Hexham ring, with purchasers eager to procure cattle now for turnout. This created an overall average that was £188 up on last year’s sale.

The first beast into the ring set the tone for the day, a heft Angus cross steer from D A & P Burn, Aydonshields sold to £2080.00.

Sharing the top honors first today were relatively new customers to Hexham, H Tulip & Son, Bilton, Alnwick, who sold an outstanding Limousin cross steer to £2300.00. Not long after this at the same money was a Blonde cross steer from Messrs. J B & N Harrison & Son, Colepike. Messrs. Harrison’s run of cattle went on to average a marvelous £2165.00.

Leading heifer on the day was an outstanding twenty-month-old, black Limousin cross heifer from Messrs S K Richardson & Son, Prospect Grange Farm that went on to realise £2100.00.  Low Middleton Livestock, Belford sold a thick Limousin cross heifer to £1990.00.

One of the days highlights was an outstanding run of sixty-four yearling Limousin cross steers and heifers from Messrs Lewis Forster & Son, West Nubbock. The run peaked at £1850.00 for a 13-month-old heifer. Steers sold to £1820.00, and the run achieved an impressive average of £1484.45.

Messrs Conley & Son, Barrasford Green sold a run of twenty-four yearling Limousin cross steers that were well drawn into pens of threes and fours that topped at £1400.00.

Messrs. H Huddleston, Round Meadows had an enjoyable day’s trading selling eleven-month-old Limousin cross steers to £1730.00. Once again, proving a late turn doesn’t affect trade here at Hexham, selling a ten-month-old, black, Limousin cross steer, just past 4:30pm, was Messrs W M Reed & Sons, Lands Farm, which went onto sell for £1600.00.

Charolais cross suckled calves were in real demand, and an eight-month-old steer from Mr K Lumley, Newbiggin Farm went on to sell to £1540.00.

Limousin cross Heifers of the same age from Messrs J R Robinson & Son, Warksfield Head peaked at £1420.00.

Messrs M & D Walton, Gleedlee sold a run of ten-month-old Limousin cross suckled calves, bred out of hairy, hill mothers at over 1000ft to a high of £1180.00 for a pair of steers to a repeat customer.

Next week sees our monthly sale of Native Bred cattle and we welcome entries over the weekend to auctioneers or to the office on Monday morning.
