May Show and Sale of Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its May Show and Sale for Store Cattle and Suckled Calves with one of the largest entries seen for quite some years with a fabulous catalogue of 1201 cattle from right across the North of England and Scottish Borders. The pre-sale show was ably judged this year by Yorkshire finisher, Mr Jack Kitching, Northallerton and once again kindly sponsored by Stoneacre Motor Group.
Credit must go to all those that presented cattle before Mr Kitching and after the classes were decided the Overall Championship went to the British Blue cross heifer class winner from J & A Moralee, Hard Riding. A very stylish black sort that went on to sell to the judge for £2680.00. Standing Reserve Overall was the Limousin cross heifer class winner, which sold to £2120.00.
Away from show, one of the best shows of cattle of the year was observed. This attracted a tremendous number of willing purchasers from across the four corners of the United Kingdom. This ensured a terrific trade throughout was seen, a trade that was much better than forecasted, considering the turmoil in the prime beef trade.
A marvelous show of heifers forward throughout the sale with many catching the eye of fellow producers. The days highest price was a heifer that came out of the annual consignment from Messrs Rochester & Murray, Glebe Farm. The thirteen-month-old British Blue crossbred heifer sold to £3750.00 after some frantic bidding. The other heifer that broke the £3000.00 barrier was a very classy Limousin cross from The Ridley Family, Shitlington Hall which realised £3300.00. The same home sold another to £2950.00.
Leading the steer trade was renowned Roman Wall producer, J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters with their phenomenal run of Charolais and Limousin bred cattle. Two beasts broke the £2800.00 barrier. Firstly a Limousin cross selling to £2820.00, followed by a Charolais selling to £2800.00.
A pair of British Blue cross heifers sold to £2780.00, a well fleshed sort from B & T Kitson, Five Houses that was matched by another out of the Rochester & Murray pen.
Later in the day the sale moved onto the younger beasts with a great offering forward with some of the finest suckler bred cattle on show. The trade for the younger cattle can only be described as remarkable and one that shouldn’t have been missed, with the trade maintaining right till the end at 6:25pm.
This was proven when David Potts, Hedley Park sold a very stylish, year old, blue roan Limousin cross heifer at 6pm in pen 74 for £2600.00.
Leading this section with a Limousin cross steer that had just had his birthday was Mr S Weatherley, Windy Hill which achieved £2510.00. Mr. Weatherley also sold a great packet of heifers which saw a high of £2240.00.
Taking no hurt from a “later turn” was Mid Northumbrian father and son, Richard and Chris Thornton, Cornhills who sold 11-month-old black Limousin cross heifers to £2450.00 and £2400.00.
Edward and Oli Dean, Kirkhouse brought a lovely contingent of ¾ bred Limousins which saw a high of £2480.00 for a year-old specimen. This was matched by a Tow Law producer who returned after the previous weeks’ exploits, R & J Crammond, Armond Carr.
New entrants Tom and Sam Wilson, Warkshaugh are slowly creating a great reputation of breeding some fantastic cattle and selling out of pen 64, they saw a high of £2460.00 for a yearling Limousin cross bullock.
This was closely followed by The Hunter Family, The Steel whose great run of Limousin bred cattle saw a high of £2440.00 for a yearling Limousin cross steer.
