Ewe Lambs

Hexham and Northern Marts held its second Mule Ewe Lamb Sale the traditional “Hexham” Sale which included the pre-sale show for NEMSA and Non NEMSA members. This year’s show was very ably judged by highly regarded Midlands’ sheep producer, Mr Matt Harrison, Milton Keynes. The show and sale was once again kindly sponsored by Sherwoods Motor Group.

There was a fantastic turn out of sheep for the show of 10 Mule Ewe lambs with thirteen pens presented before the judge, one of the largest seen for some years. After much deliberation due to a very tightly fought contest, the first prize, NEMSA Champion rosette and The Arthur Iveson Shield went to the very powerful and stylish pen from M & C Ridley, Shitlington Hall.

Prize List:

Best Pen of 10 Mule Ewe Lambs (ex BF)

1st – M W & C M Ridley, Shitlington Hall (Today’s Champion Pen)

2nd – W & P F Walton, Penpeugh

3rd – J Hunter & Son, The Steel

This pen were again a terrific example of the breed and attracted genuine interest from across the country and went on to cash for the days joint highest price of £295.00 selling to Mr R Pattinson, The Temon.

After the show the sale kicked off in some style with the fantastic run of 201 lambs from A & T Dixon, Chirdon. This run attracts a great following year on year with a fantastic reputation and were very easily sold, with the first pen into the ring exchanging hands at £265.00. The Chirdon team went on to enjoy selling other pens to £260.00 & £258.00 and left with a handsome average of £226.51.

First time consignors Airey Bros, Brownchesters brought a very powerful pen of 10 which caught the eye of many and went on to realise the joint highest price on the day of £295.00.

Winning The Hexham & Northern Mart Shield for the best run of 60 was Armstrong & Hunter, Carrick for their very level run of lambs which sold to £275.00.

The trade in general would be sharper than recent sales due to the strong genuine buyer presence here at Hexham, making it the leading centre for the lambs of the type. Tupping type lambs would be £15-20 dearer than recent sales with twelve pens breaking the £250.00 barrier from multiple homes.

The sale as usual consisted heavily of nice running types and these sold well after yesterday’s successful shearling sale. Many of these sold more than £185.00. The sale went on to average a very respectable £197.22 (+£18) for 100 more lambs forward. A great sale all round.

Next sale shall be conducted on Thursday 1st of October. Entries now taken.
